The expected hiring range for this position is

$119,200.00-$169,467.00.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such the scope and responsibilities of the position, qualifications of the selected candidate, business considerations, internal equity, and external market pay for comparable jobs.

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES: Under minimal supervision, directs project tasks for the precise three-dimensional alignment and metrology aspects of accelerators, beam lines, detectors, specialty equipment, and infrastructure projects with large scope and physical dimension. Applies the best technology, instrumentation and practices with the greatest accuracy to the assigned tasks using best self-directed judgment. This includes geodetic and industrial metrology aspects such as differential GPS and conventional survey, laser tracking interferometry, and digital photogrammetry in the development of spatial networks and precision mapping of beam components to fulfill the experimental project requirements. Analyzes potential resource requirements and acts as liaison for communication and work requests between projects and the assigned metrology group.

NOTE: The position is for a period of up to three (3) years, with the potential for extension considered on a two-year basis thereafter, and subject to continued funding.

YOU WILL:

  • Provides technical expertise and authoritative advice on LBNF/DUNE systems at Fermilab regarding geodetic and alignment aspects for commissioning and detector operation.
  • Responsible for implementing and evaluating the effectiveness of the LBNF/DUNE Quality Assurance (QA) program. Collaborates with LBNF/DUNE QA Manager and Consortia for specialized quality plans and requirements to assure compliance with all applicable regulations, requirements and orders. Ensures staff are sufficiently trained in QA procedures.
  • Directs Project alignment and metrology activities and technical staff for the placement of new detector elements and maintaining existing components for all LBNF/DUNE detector systems to achieve long range goals of the Project. Oversight of testing, maintenance and upgrading of LBNF/DUNE facilities and instruments.
  • Evaluates proposals for new installations and developments to determine geodetic and alignment requirements. Participates in the development of schedules and technical aspects of critical decision documentation of proposed installation.
  • Reviews alignment, metrology and related work in coordination with LBNF/DUNE Installation team. Ensures adequate documentation is complete and updates procedures and practices for installation through planning (pre-activity meetings).
  • Develops high accuracy medium and large-scale geodetic networks to meet positioning criteria of the LBNF/DUNE experiment installation.
  • Evaluates technological advances in the applications of geodesy, alignment, and mapping, such as GPS and conventional survey, laser tracking interferometry, and photogrammetry for higher accuracy requirements.
  • Develops and improves computer software programs required for data acquisition, quality control analyses, and data validation for database and archival requirements.
  • Analyzes resource requirements and acts as liaison for all communication and work requests between existing beam lines, experiments and the assigned metrology group.
  • Directs project activities of junior staff and metrology teams.
  • Leads alignment crews in scheduling, safety, and quality control activities.
  • Recommends changes in procedures and instrumentation to improve effectiveness, quality and techniques of the resulting product.
  • Prepares technical correspondence and reports, authors or co-authors scientific papers for publication or for presentation at technical meetings, conferences, and workshops.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • Abides by and is responsible for performing all duties in accordance with all environmental, health and safety regulations and practices pertinent to this position.

Minimum Required Education and Experience: Bachelor of Geodesy with 7+ years of experience. Preferred: Master of Geodesy with 5+ years of experience or a PhD with 3+ years of experience. In lieu ofdegree, 15+ years of relevant experience, preferably at a particle physics laboratory.

Applicable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: Ability to develop software programs such as least squares analysis programs. Must have experience in applied physical Geodesy to apply the proper corrections for the long base line program at Fermilab.
