Learn more about the benefits of working at UC Brief Summary of Job DutiesMonitors/operates all equipment and accesses all resources within the Dispatch Center. The majority of each shift is at the console monitoring radios and alarms, radio dispatching personnel, answering phones, computer input/retrieval using specialized software, including CLETS, alarm software, and 911/telephone software in addition to common Microsoft Windows-based programs. This position may also require the release of emergency messages and communications to the UCSB community in the event of an emergency. Required Qualifications

Job Functions/Percentage of Time/DutiesEmergency Calls: 10% Answers all emerency 911, Campus Emergency, and Elevator Emergency telephone lines for campus and all University owned housing and property. Utilizes special telephone equipment to communicate with the deaf in emergencies (TDD). Responds by calming, assuring, and directing the caller; verifying the location; evaluating emergency information (medical, crime-in-progress, fire, and other life-threatening occurrences) for priority ranking before dispatching emergency unit personnel. Dispatches appropriate emergency unit (police, rescue, or fire) utilizing two-way radio system. Operates radio system in accordance with regulations of the Federal Communications Commission and University Communications Manual. Radio Communications & Briefings: 35% Monitors all radio receivers assigned to console in order to coordinate interagency response as required. Assures safety of field personnel by monitoring and maintaining communication links, and researching information for field personnel through department records and State/County criminal, civil, and vehicle regulations and codes. Broadcasts information received from other police agencies on wanted persons and vehicles. Rebroadcasts all-points bulletins. Transmits radio traffic to and from other stations or agencies. Keeps the duty sergeant or watch commander informed of all unusual or critical incidents. Likewise must notify appropriate supervisors of critical incidents (i.e., Chief of Police, Facilities Management, Public Information Officers for press releases, etc.). Attends shift briefing if possible, and briefs next dispatcher going on duty as to current situation in the field and any other important information regarding equipment status and any current alarms. Receives information from units in the field regarding calls for service and field-initiated activity. Log & Record Maintenance: 10% Maintains chronological record of all calls, critical or routine, in accordance with FCC regulations and University Police Communications Manual. Maintains Department Information Logs including Daily Activity Logs, and Be-On-the-Lookout logs. Also maintains centralized resource books such as Policies and Procedures, General Orders, Administrative Orders and Departmental Information. Provides check-out system of University building master keys for Police Personnel and other University employees as appropriate. Public Information: 10% Receives general calls-for-service from the public or other allied agencies by telephone, teletype, or in person at the front counter. Provides assistance to the public by answering questions regarding departmental procedures, directions and general information. Monitors, operates, and maintains security of California Law Enforcement Teletype System (CLETS)/National Crime Information Center (NCIC) information system. Enters data and makes inquiries regarding wanted persons, vehicles, and property for patrol, detectives, and records personnel. Monitors, operates, and maintains security of multitrack recording equipment and a variety of computer systems (911 address database, campus fire alarms, CLETS terminal and campus equipment alarm computer). Monitors and responds to campus burglary, robbery, fire and equipment alarms. Must receive, acknowledge, and confirm alarm information by computer and emergency or maintenance personnel. Support Services: 20% Provides support for the Community Service Organization by answering escort line and dispatching CSOs according to request and call priorities; answering general business lines and dispatching CSOs for building access assistance, lock cuts, bicycle licensing, bicycle parking, ownership disputes, impounds and releases and skateboarder complaints. Provides support for Lost and Found Office by providing information to the public regarding lost and found; receiving lost items and returning found items to the public; and forwarding items to Lost and found Storage. Provides support service for Records Division by processing, filing, and researching reports; indexing and filing Departmental Contacts Cards; entering information or inquires into the computerized CLETS system related to departmental criminal records; providing telephone support for Records personnel; assisting departmental personnel in obtaining report information; maintaining Daily Logs from which the Records division obtains information for statistical purposes as mandated by the State and Federal Departments of Justice; and possessing a working knowledge of California State Records System in order to provide 24 hour access to Records.
