| Primary Purpose of Department |
The Department of Psychological Science is an academic community of teacher/scholars and doctoral, master's, and undergraduate students that is engaged in advancing the discovery, dissemination, and application of knowledge in traditional areas of psychology in general and applied areas of psychology in particular. The Department of Psychological Science seeks to provide quality undergraduate education and to attain national and international recognition for research and graduate training in Health Psychology and Organizational Sciences. We strive to achieve our mission in order to:
- To prepare students for careers in science and professional practice in Health Psychology and Organizational Science;
- To advance basic and applied psychological research;
- To build connections with and make contributions that benefit our local community.
Psychological Science houses the Behavioral Health and Resiliency Psychology Clinic, also called the "BeHealthieR Clinic," which is a low-cost mental health outpatient clinic. It is staffed by seven tenure track faculty who are licensed psychologists and approximately 25 PhD students. The clinic's purpose is to: 1) provide quality psychological services at an affordable cost to increase access to mental health care, and 2) serve as a training facility for doctoral clinical students in the Health Psychology Ph.D. Program (which includes our clinical psychology training program). We currently offer services (including assessment, individual, couples, and group therapy) only to members of the
UNC Charlotte student community. In the future, we hope to expand our services to the broader Charlotte area.
The Department of Psychological Science, which has one of the most popular undergraduate majors on campus, offers a BS degree and MA degrees in general and industrial/organizational psychology. The department is also the administrative home for the Health Psychology PhD program and provides substantial support to the Organizational Science PhD program. The department also houses the Biobehavioral Core Lab, a shared research facility for the collection, processing, and analysis of biological specimens. Department faculty and students collaborate with scholars across the university, including the College of Health and Human Services, the Belk College of Business, and the Cato College of Education. The interdisciplinary Health Psychology Program (
http://healthpsych.charlotte.edu) includes faculty from the departments of Psychological Science, Public Health and Health Administration, Communication Studies, Nursing, Applied Physiology, Health, & Clinical Sciences, and other relevant disciplines. It comprises three concentrations: an
APA-accredited Clinical Psychology program that adheres to the scientist-practitioner training model, a Community Psychology program, and a Behavioral Science program.
As the largest and most academically diverse college at
UNC Charlotte, the College of Humanities & Earth and Social Sciences houses 14 departments, 13 interdisciplinary programs, and 7 applied centers. We offer a wide range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs with extensive honors and early-entry options.
