  • Implement appropriate data security, privacy, access-control, and secure coding practices, particularly for community-reported health information.
  • Optimize the platform for performance, reliability, usability, accessibility, and scalability.
  • Document source code, system architecture, APIs, development processes, testing procedures, and technical decisions to support continuity and future development.
  • Use version control and established software development practices to manage code changes, releases, and deployments.
  • Participate in regular project meetings, demonstrations, code reviews, and development planning with supervising faculty and the broader project team.
  • Incorporate feedback from faculty, public health subject-matter experts, users, and other stakeholders into iterative improvements to the platform.

  • Knowledge of API design, authentication and role-based access control, including rules for sharing data across state, county, city and tribal jurisdictions.

  • Skill in designing PostgreSQL schemas that bring together human, animal and environmental reports, including location data.
  • Skill in building and evaluating LLM services with checks for accuracy and verifiable sources before results reach public health users.
  • Ability to write tested, documented code and to review code from teammates and AI coding assistants.
  • Knowledge of AWS services for hosting and protecting a web application (e.g., EC2, S3, IAM and backups), and of Docker Compose deployments on Linux.

  • Skill in building and maintaining CI/CD with GitHub, monitoring and alerting, and separate development, staging and production environments.
  • Skill in setting clear rules for how AI coding agents (e.g., Codex) access the codebase, and how their changes are reviewed, tested and merged.
