SUMMARY

Engineering at Mortenson is different. Engineering Services is a dedicated in-house engineering organization that supports some of the most complex and impactful projects across North America. Our engineers contribute to a diverse portfolio spanning energy and transmission infrastructure, utility-scale renewable power, battery energy storage, data centers, manufacturing facilities, and other large-scale infrastructure developments. Rather than serving as a traditional consulting firm or performing field construction work, our engineers collaborate closely with project development, design, procurement, and construction teams to provide technical expertise, optimize designs, improve constructability, and solve complex challenges throughout the project lifecycle. This unique model allows engineers to see the direct impact of their work while enjoying diverse technical opportunities, cross-functional collaboration, and the backing of one of the nation's leading builders. If you're looking for a role where technical excellence, innovation, and real-world application come together, Engineering Services offers a unique opportunity to influence projects from concept through completion.

The Engineer III or IV - Data Center Application Electrical Engineer role is an electrical engineering position within Engineering Services that provides early-stage design creation and technical support to data center projects through pursuit, design phase, procurement, construction and commissioning stages of projects. This position is a technical expert providing support across the lifecycle of data center projects.

This role also supports Mortenson's Supply Chain functions purchasing data center equipment, executing technical reviews for strategic sourcing and standardization of data center equipment (e.g., switchgear, UPS, generators, ATS, panelboards, transformers, and distribution).

Hiring Locations: Minneapolis, MN / Denver, CO / Fargo, ND / San Antonio, TX and remote locations would be considered

RESPONSIBILITIES

Data Center Application Electrical Engineer

  • Support Data Center pursuits by reviewing RFP/RFQ requirements, identifying technical risks/clarifications, and reviewing equipment and basis-of-design inputs.
  • Provide application-level engineering support for data center electrical systems and equipment selection (MV/LV switchgear, generators, UPS, ATS, transformers, busway, PDUs/RPPs, panelboards, grounding/bonding, and protective devices)
  • Coordinate with designers, commissioning, construction, and vendors to resolve technical issues, RFIs, and field conditions.
  • Review and comment on single-lines, equipment layouts, sequences of operation, short-circuit/coordination study assumptions (as applicable), and commissioning test requirements to ensure alignment with project standards and performance objectives.
  • Support startup, testing, and commissioning activities by validating submittals, participating in factory/site witness testing as needed, and assisting with issue resolution through turnover.
  • Technical knowledge of substation design and construction for data center projects including physical substation design - equipment specifications, MSG/switchgear, MV ductbanks, conduit, grounding, etc.
  • Experience with ampacity studies for MV cables in and outside of duct banks within the software Cymcap.

Supply Chain Technical Reviews

  • During the RFP/RFQ phase, review client and program requirements, baseline testing requirements, and applicable standards; provide technical comments; identify potential clarifications, exceptions, or addalternates; and evaluate testing beyond code compliance necessary to manage risk.
  • Perform technical reviews of data center electrical equipment submittals (e.g., MV/LV switchgear, generators, UPS, ATS, transformers, PDUs/RPPs, panelboards, busway, breakers/protective devices).
  • Partner with Supply Chain to support sourcing decisions through technical evaluations, vendor comparisons, standardization efforts, and definition/maintenance of equipment requirements and templates.
  • Review manufacturer submittals against project specifications, drawings, and approved standards (including program/CDE requirements where applicable).
  • Identify technical non-compliance, coordination issues, schedule/lead-time impacts, and constructability concerns; document recommended actions and risk items.
  • Provide clear written engineering comments and recommendations for project teams and non-engineering stakeholders.
  • Participate in technical coordination meetings with internal teams, designers, vendors, and commissioning partners.

Cross-Functional Coordination

  • Communicate engineering findings clearly to non-engineering stakeholders.
  • Document assumptions, interpretations, and recommendations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related Engineering discipline.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead program-level standards, equipment strategies, and cross-functional technical decision-making (Engineering, Supply Chain, Operations, Commissioning, and vendors).
