Description
Position Summary

The role involves installing and maintaining insulation on building systems, storage vessels, and mechanical equipment to improve energy efficiency, prevent heat loss, and protect structures from thermal and vibrational damage. Work is performed on-site at various A/Z locations, and may include office duties when required


Key Responsibilities


  • Insulation Installation & Repair: Apply, remove, and repair insulation on steam/hot water pipes, cold/chilled water lines, boilers, tanks, vessels, heat exchangers, and ductwork.



  • Material Selection: Choose appropriate insulation types (fiberglass, foam rubber, Styrofoam, foam glass, urethane) based on temperature, location, surface, and equipment use.



  • Measurement & Cutting: Measure, cut, and fit insulation using tape measures, handsaws, knives, scissors, and other tools.



  • Blueprint Reading: Interpret prints, plans, and technical drawings to ensure correct installation.



  • Surface Preparation: Clean, prime, or attach pins to surfaces before insulation application.



  • Sealing & Protection: Cover and seal insulated surfaces with metal jacketing, plastic covers, canvas strips, sealants, tape, or mastic; install sheet metal where needed for weather/physical protection.



  • Site Setup & Cleanup: Move materials, set up work areas, and maintain cleanliness.



  • Safety Compliance: Follow hazardous waste handling rules, wear required PPE,and comply with all safety and project rules.



  • Recordkeeping & Tool Maintenance: Complete job records, maintain tools, and perform housekeeping tasks.




Skills & Qualifications


  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.



  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting safety rules, manuals, and technical documents.



  • Basic math skills and attention to accuracy.



  • Mechanical aptitude for troubleshooting and repairs.



  • Physical stamina for lifting, cutting, and working in confined or elevated spaces.



  • Preferred: 3-5 years' experience as an industrial mechanical insulator; OSHA 10-hour certification.



Qualifications

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE/REQUIREMENTS:



  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team;
  • Experience: 0-3 years of Field Experience, trade school or apprenticeship;
  • Be highly focused on customer satisfaction expectations;
  • Good documentation and record keeping;
  • Preparation of miscellaneous paperwork including time sheets, daily reports and material requests;
  • Understanding of and strict adherence to daily Job Hazard Analysis (JHA);
  • OSHA 10 certification.
