How you will make an impact

The Senior Principal Scientist 1 is charged with leading, designing, conducting, and analyzing experimental work to support Halozyme's drug delivery platform, alliance collaborations, and device research. This position identifies and develops technical innovations to promote future business growth and improvements that meet Halozyme's and its partners' requirements. The Senior Principal Scientist 1 brings expertise in subcutaneous (SC) drug delivery and familiarity with preclinical models in both large and small animals. They engage with several Halozyme departments such as Product Development, Business Development, Device Development, and Intellectual Property Council. They also partner with Drug Delivery teams at alliances to lead discussions, compile and present data, attend meetings, and review clinical and regulatory materials as needed.

In this position, you'll have the chance to:
  • Plan, build, and conduct in vivo nonclinical exploratory and preclinical drug delivery studies to evaluate SC drug delivery and device technologies using Halozyme's drug delivery platforms.

  • Collaborate with platform teams to plan, build, conduct, analyze, and interpret data, and prepare nonclinical study reports and summaries to support drug delivery efforts.

  • Ensure successful completion of nonclinical studies to meet clinical needs for Halozyme and its alliance partners.

  • Support Halozyme's and its partners' regulatory filings by drafting and/or reviewing clinical trial study protocols, drug administration instructions, pharmacy manuals, and other regulatory documents.

  • Continue to develop experimental models to further expand drug delivery research and medical device development and knowledge.

  • Provide preclinical research support to assess novel or alternative drug delivery technologies to grow Halozyme's business portfolio.

  • Enable innovation and technical strategy projects, generate IP, and contribute to scientific publications.

  • Support multiple programs simultaneously in a fast-paced, global environment and drive project timelines based on project needs and input from Innovation colleagues and cross-functional teams.

  • Ensure compliance with company-established practices and procedures, including laboratory notebooks, computer files, quality and regulatory guidelines, and safety standards.

  • Participate in department and alliance team meetings.

  • Report and present scientific findings at appropriate scientific venues.

  • Strive to be a Halozyme subject matter expert in one or more drug delivery fields.

  • Provide leadership and set standards within the organization, driving toward a culture of quality, significant results, rapid delivery, collaboration, and Halozyme's core values.

To thrive in this position, you'll need:
  • A Doctoral (Ph.D. or equivalent experience) in a suitable subject area like physiology, pharmacology, pharmaceutical sciences, or drug delivery is needed. This must be paired with at least 10 years of relevant industrial experience. Candidates with a Masters (M.S. or equivalent experience) and 15 years or a BS (or equivalent experience) plus 20 years are also eligible.

  • An equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered

  • A strong background, in-depth knowledge, and hands-on technical ability in subcutaneous drug delivery. Proven problem-solving skills are a must. Expert knowledge of scientific principles and concepts.

  • Demonstrated technical proficiency, scientific creativity, collaboration with others, and independent thought.

  • Record of peer-reviewed publications involving preclinical models.

  • Expertise in crafting and conducting nonclinical in vivo studies is required.

  • Experience with medical devices, such as auto-injectors and on-body delivery systems, is preferred.

  • Experience with computer methods for data acquisition and analysis required.

  • Strong mathematical skills desired.

  • Exercise judgment and build procedures and practices to determine appropriate action.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally both verbally and in written format.

  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities to develop a high-performing team, inspire change and influence internal and external collaborators.

  • Self-motivated, well-organized, with the ability to work independently and enjoy scientific investigation and thinking, proactively identifying issues, and developing solutions in a collaborative multidisciplinary environment.

Environmental Conditions:

Physical Activities: On a continuous basis, be at a desk for a long period of time; intermittently answer the telephone and type on a computer. Some walking and lifting up to 20 lbs. may be required. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.

Travel:

Travel may be required up to 20% of your time.

The most likely base pay range for this position is $180,000 - $240,000 per year. Several factors, such as experience, tenure, skills, and particular business needs, will determine an individual's exact level of compensation. Base salary is only one element of employee compensation at Halozyme. Total compensation could include bonuses, sales incentives, and equity awards.
