About the Community:

Harvard, Illinois, is a historic small town in McHenry County, known for its agricultural roots and strong community spirit. Established in 1856, the town grew rapidly after the Chicago and North Western Railroad arrived, connecting Harvard to other parts of the state. Incorporated as a city in 1891, Harvard's early economy was centered around the railroad, and the Ayer Hotel became a key gathering place, especially during the Civil War.

Today, Harvard celebrates its agricultural heritage with the annual Harvard Milk Days festival, a beloved event that honors the town's role in milk production during World War II. The festival features a parade, carnival, and live entertainment, with Harmilda, a life-sized fiberglass cow statue, standing as a symbol of the town's dairy history.

With its rich past and community-driven events, Harvard offers a charming glimpse into small-town life, where tradition and modern-day charm come together.

  • Cost of living: Harvard offers a very affordable cost of living, with low housing prices and a charming rural atmosphere.
  • Known for: The annual Milk Days Festival and its historical role as a dairy industry hub
  • History: Founded in 1856, Harvard was known for its dairy farming industry and continues to celebrate that heritage.
