Description

The Children's Home of Poughkeepsie has been caring for children throughout the Hudson Valley for over 175 years! We strive to empower children and families to achieve optimal health and well being. We are currently seeking a Assistant Teacher to work in our UC LTFC Program.



Position Summary:

The UC Assistant Teacher is responsible for facilitating the delivery of six hours of culturally diverse structured education, Monday through Friday and aiding UC Teacher in classroom management and instruction. This includes, but is not limited to: administering initial education assessments, developing educational goals in conjunction with the UC Teacher and completing Progress Reports. The Teacher's Assistant is responsible for uploading all required documentation to the UAC Portal and ensuring compliance with ORR policies and procedures. He/She will contribute to the development of the curriculum, classroom coverage as needed, completion of UC Portal documentation, maintenance of UC paper and electronic records.



Essential Functions and Responsibilities:



  1. Apply the Sanctuary Model's trauma-informed principles by fostering safety, emotional awareness, respect for loss, and hope for the future (S.E.L.F.); uphold the Seven Commitments (Nonviolence, Emotional Intelligence, Social Learning, Democracy, Open Communication, Social Responsibility, and Growth & Change) in all interactions with clients, families, and colleagues.
  2. Implement academic instruction as part of the educational program.
  3. Assist in the provision of six hours per day of culturally diverse, structured education, Monday through Friday.
  4. Create and implement a curriculum that meets all New York State Education requirements, including all basic academic areas: Science, Social Studies, Math, Reading, Writing, Physical Education, and English as a Second Language (ESL).
  5. Assist in the delivery of age appropriate and culturally competent material to prepare youth for entering the public school system.
  6. Register eligible youth in a General Educational Development (GED) program and provide ongoing support to ensure the successful completion of the course and prepare for the examination.
  7. Provide academic assistance, including afterschool tutoring and homework help, for youth.
  8. Maintain safety in the classroom and engage in effective classroom management strategies.
  9. Create culturally appropriate activities to celebrate holidays in the United States and youth's country of origin.
  10. Administer an Educational Assessment within 72 hours of the youth's admission.
  11. Formulate academic goals for youth in care at 30 day intervals.
  12. Upload documentation as it pertains to academic assessments and goals in the database.
  13. Help to provide direction to other staff providing support services in the school.
  14. Responsible for continued professional development through attendance at in-service seminars, participation in conferences and workshops and/or continued study at higher education institutions.
  15. Attend all mandatory training as scheduled, including but not limited to New Hire Orientation, Sanctuary, TCI certifications and CPR/First Aid certifications and must complete 40 hours annually of O.R.R (Office of Refugee Resettlement) training.



Schedules:

Monday - Friday, 10am-6pm, Saturday-Sunday OFF

Qualifications

MINIMUM Qualifications:



  • Associates Degree
  • Experience working in a classroom or providing education
  • Bilingual Spanish / English



PREFERRED Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's Degree in Education or a related field
  • Certification by a relevant governing authority
  • Teaching English as a Second Language certification
