Associate Director, Software Development and Support

Personalis, Inc. is a leader in advanced cancer genomics for enabling the next generation of precision cancer therapies and diagnostics. The Personalis NeXT Platform is designed to adapt to the complex and evolving understanding of cancer, providing its biopharmaceutical customers and clinicians with information on all of the approximately 20,000 human genes, together with the immune system, from a single tissue sample. In population sequencing, Personalis operates one of the largest sequencing operations globally and is currently the sole sequencing provider to Veterans Affairs' Million Veteran Program. To enable cancer and population sequencing, Personalis' Clinical Laboratory was built with a focus on clinical accuracy, quality, big data, scale and efficiency. The laboratory is GxP-aligned as well as Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988-certified and College of American Pathologists-accredited. Personalis is based in Fremont, California.

Summary:

We are seeking an experienced Associate Director, Software Development and Supportto lead software engineering and application support functions in a regulated clinical laboratory environment. This role is responsible for managing the full software development lifecycle, production support operations, and internal/offshore teams while ensuring compliance with healthcare and laboratory regulations, including HIPAA, CLIA, CAP, FDA (as applicable), and other relevant regulatory standards.

The ideal candidate combines strong technical leadership, operational excellence, regulatory awareness, and experience managing distributed teams to deliver secure, reliable, and compliant software solutions that support laboratory operations, diagnostics, and business functions.

Responsibilities:

Software Development and Support Leadership

• Lead the design, development, testing, deployment, and maintenance of software applications and platforms used in patient testing and billing operations.
• Manage Agile/Scrum development processes, sprint planning, backlog prioritization, and release management.
• Collaborate with business stakeholders, product owners, and technical architects to define requirements and deliver solutions aligned with organizational goals.
• Review technical designs and oversee code quality, security, scalability, and performance standards.
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives across the software development lifecycle (SDLC).
• Oversee application support teams to ensure timely resolution of incidents, service requests, and production issues.
• Define and monitor Service Level Agreements (SLAs), Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), and operational metrics.
• Implement root-cause analysis and preventive measures to minimize recurring issues.
• Coordinate production deployments, maintenance activities, and change management processes.
• Ensure business continuity through effective monitoring, documentation, and support procedures.
• Manage and mentor internal and offshore development and support teams.
• Build strong collaboration between geographically distributed teams across different time zones.
• Serve as the primary liaison between internal stakeholders and offshore development/support partners.
• Allocate resources effectively to meet project and operational objectives.
• Foster a culture of accountability, innovation, continuous learning, and teamwork.
• Facilitate cross-functional collaboration between business, QA, infrastructure, security, and support teams.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or related field.
• 7+ years of software development experience with at least 3+ years in a leadership or management role.
• Prior experience in a regulated healthcare or diagnostics environment (CLIA, CAP, FDA, or NYSDOH).
• Experience managing both software development and production support teams.
• Proven success leading distributed, offshore, or global teams.
• Experience with enterprise system and automation systems integrations
• Strong understanding of software development methodologies (Agile, Scrum, Kanban).
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
• Knowledge of DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and application lifecycle management.
• Strong problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making skills.
• Familiarity with enterprise applications, APIs, microservices, and modern software architectures.
• Experience with monitoring, incident management, and service management tools.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

The hiring range for this position is $230,000 to $270,000 per year, which may factor in various geographic regions. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate's geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. Our full-time regular positions also include an annual performance-based bonus (or a sales incentive plan) and long-term incentive units (equity) provided as part of our compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
