AES Clean Energy is currently seeking a Director of Project Management, Wind to oversee a team of Senior Project Managers, Project Managers, and Associate Project Managers for the execution of utility-scale wind power construction projects. This leadership position will provide team leadership, process improvements, stakeholder management, strategic planning, and grow a high functioning team necessary to safely and reliably execute our renewable energy projects in support of our growth strategy. The successful candidate will have a depth of experience in the renewable energy generation industry, team management, construction contracting, project execution and commissioning, utility interconnections, stakeholder management, and an ability to meet aggressive growth targets and project deadlines. The position will report to the Vice President of Wind and EPC Business Operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • People Management: Lead a team of Project Managers and third-party contractor resources to execute the construction of wind power projects and related substations.
  • Drive collaboration between Wind Execution, Engineering, Development and other internal stakeholders.
  • Lead the Project Management team's support of the Project Due Diligence process for projects being pursued in development
  • Lead the Project Management team's coordination of commissioning activities in support of utility witness testing and plant performance testing
  • Lead the Project Management team's transfer of projects from the Construction and Commissioning phase to the Asset Management team for long term plant operations.
  • Ensure the company's portfolio of projects are executed on time and within budget and coordinate the support of project financing transactions and timing with project execution schedules. Provide executive reporting on project portfolio statuses including budget, schedule, resource utilization, and risk assessments.
  • EPC Selection and Contract Negotiations: Optimize and maintain a qualified list of EPC contractors for utility scale project execution. Support and lead contract negotiations, exhibit management, and coordination with EPC contractors and OEM vendors. Oversee contract execution for construction management, EPC, and OEM.
  • Conduct periodic project site visits for quality, safety, and overall execution oversight. Engage with local stakeholders (permitting agencies, government entities, contractors, landowners, PPA off-takers/customers, utilities, vendors, etc) as needed to ensure the successful completion of projects
  • Coordinate with the Development team to support project planning, risk assessments, budgeting, scheduling, and resource planning for AES's renewable energy projects
  • Advocate for and oversee the continuous implementation and improvement of procedures, standards, and processes for project planning and execution, scheduling, budgeting, document management, construction completion tracking, KPI reporting, and project tax equity and debt funding support.
  • Stakeholder Management: provide leadership for interactions with contractors, landowners, customers, suppliers, governmental authorities, electric utilities, and other project stakeholders as appropriate as a representative of AES and its interests. This includes internal stakeholders who engage directly with and/or provide support for project execution.
  • Build robust relationships with construction contractors, local vendors and suppliers, to grow the company's execution capabilities and improve project efficiencies and costs.
  • Leadership of construction planning, resource management, project execution management, safety and environmental compliance management in coordination with company EHS resources, quality control program management, risk mitigation, lessons learned and best practice creation, strategic planning for company growth, and cross departmental internal coordination and business process management.
  • Leadership of best practices and management for transitioning projects post-commercial operations into long term operations with the AES Asset Management team.
  • Support for Technical Project Due Diligence.
  • Establish and manage key performance indicators (KPI's) for project management and provide executive level performance reporting with leading indicators of KPI risk for company improvement, risk mitigation, and improving execution performance.
  • Lead the development and implementation of a growth strategy to expand the capabilities of the project management team

Key Requirements:

  • 10-15 years of renewable energy generation construction experience with at least 5 years of wind construction experience, and 2-5 years of people/team management experience required.
  • Bachelor's degree in related field is required, or equivalent work experience. Master's degree is preferred.
  • Experience in utility-scale wind construction oversight, HV construction oversight, and energization/commissioning coordination required.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate and negotiate EPC/TSA and other relevant contractual agreements; experience with wind PPAs, EPCAs, and TSAs strongly preferred
  • Ability to build strong, effective internal and external relationships and lead a team of project managers with variable remote presence across multiple time zones
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, including internal and external stakeholder and vendor management and ability to maintain professional and effective exchanges with counterparties
  • Able to work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment, leading project execution on a large portfolio of high impact projects simultaneously in support of company goals
  • Excellent organizational, project, planning & time management skills.
  • Ability to establish and manage construction key performance indicators (KPI's)
  • Ability to work under pressure in a calm, professional manner to meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrates strong alignment with AES Values.
  • Strong computer and analytical skills, proficient with MS Office suite, Quickbase/PTRACK, Box, Procore, SAP, and MS Teams
  • Willingness to travel up to 40%.
  • PMI PMP Certification a plus.
