The Life/Disability Financial Underwriter, supporting a healthcare client of Aquent, prepares offers for prospective and renewal clients in the small and mid-market group segments, specifically focusing on Life, Short-Term, and Long-Term Disability opportunities. This role involves performing detailed risk selection and financial analysis while providing appropriate rationale and support to Sales, clients, and internal teams regarding rate computations and financial activity. Responsibilities include providing expense estimates and accurate analysis of financial exhibits while maintaining a deep understanding of departmental strategy and organizational operating objectives.

Operating with minimal direction, this individual makes decisions regarding their own work methods and technical approaches, even in ambiguous situations. Beyond tactical underwriting, the role ensures all assignments follow established guidelines and procedures while maintaining high performance and accountability in a remote work environment. Final deliverables must reflect a comprehensive understanding of risk pool management and the competitor landscape to support the organization's broader financial and consumer experience goals.

Responsibilities:



  • Recommends and communicates competitive pricing and product solutions to meet specific customer requirements.
  • Reviews contracts and plan designs to evaluate the ability to match or enhance coverage for takeover business.
  • Utilizes manual rating systems, experience data, and provider reporting to make informed pricing decisions.
  • Negotiates with Sales and Account Management teams to prepare compelling offers for new and existing business.
  • Manages the administrative processing of cases using various underwriting tools, systems, and databases.
  • Ensures effective documentation and clear communication of all underwriting decisions.
  • Demonstrates superior time and desk management skills to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Participates in project work aimed at developing or improving internal underwriting processes and tools.
  • Collaborates cross-functionally to ensure plan designs and engagement tools align with program goals.


Required Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • Two or more years of Short-Term and Long-Term Disability underwriting and risk analysis experience.
  • Comprehensive understanding of risk pool management and knowledge of the competitor landscape.
  • Strong negotiation and communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain accountability and high performance in a remote work setting.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Experience analyzing disability and health-related data.
  • Experience with Dental and Vision plans is highly beneficial.
  • Industry-related coursework or professional certifications.


The target hiring compensation range for this role is $45 to $49 an hour. Compensation is based on several factors including, but not limited to education, relevant work experience, relevant certifications, and location.
