What to Expect
The Test Systems Engineering team is an agile hardware testing group working across both Vehicle, Energy, and Robotic programs to build a world of amazing abundance. The team provides turnkey test solutions, collaborating with various groups from research and development to manufacturing test. Leveraging Tesla's own products and technologies, we create innovative test solutions that expedite R&D and validation cycle times, reducing both cost and complexity. These solutions include motor, actuators, powertrain, and vehicle dynamometers, high-power bidirectional AC and DC sources, grid simulators, data acquisition, and advanced software control systems. This function operates at the heart of Tesla's core technologies, empowering engineers to push the boundaries of electric vehicles and energy innovation.
What You'll Do
- Commission and bring up new test systems including motor dynos, powertrain dynos, chassis dynos, and next-generation platforms
- Characterize motors, power supplies, and power electronics systems - tuning/testing control loops, running performance sweeps, and validating system behavior
- Develop and deliver new features, bug fixes, and improvements to the test platform software
- Write test automation scripts and tooling in Python to reduce manual effort and improve reliability across the fleet
- Integrate new hardware into existing test systems - including instrumentation, harnesses, power electronics, cooling systems, and mechanical fixtures
- Validate software changes on real systems, catch integration issues early, and provide structured feedback to SW teams during rollouts and customer test campaigns
- Roll out systemic changes (both HW and SW) across the full fleet of test systems, ensuring consistency and customer assurance
- Collaborate directly with EE, ME, SW, and build teams on cross-functional integration, prototyping, and system commissioning
- Diagnose and troubleshoot issues at dynos and test stands - capturing the right data and working with the design team to drive solutions
What You'll Bring
- Degree in related field or equivalent experience
- Strong hands-on troubleshooting skills across electrical, mechanical, and software domains-comfortable working physically at test systems and dynamometers
- Experience with laboratory test equipment, including oscilloscopes, power analyzers, multimeters, sensors, and other instrumentation
- Familiarity with high voltage power electronic systems (inverters, DCDC converters), electric motors, and low voltage control systems
- Working knowledge of Python for test automation, scripting, and data analysis (embedded C is a plus)
- Familiarity with communication interfaces such as CAN/CAN FD, LIN, Modbus, SCPI, Automotive Ethernet, EtherCAT, etc.
- Motivation to work hands-on in solving problems efficiently to meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Strong communication skills for documenting findings and collaborating across EE, ME, SW, and build teams
- Experience with system-level integration, commissioning, or field service of complex electromechanical test systems
