What Your Job Will Be Like

The Advanced Fuzing Technology department (7627) has a broad portfolio that involves contributions to both Sandias Nuclear Deterrence mission and various Strategic Partnership Programs supporting work across the U.S. government. We are on the forefront of research and development activities in the DoD and DOE fuzing communities. To this end, we seek to fill a position in our technical staff for designing, developing, analyzing, testing, qualifying, and monitoring products and technologies associated with fuzing and firing subsystems.

We provide opportunities for leadership, travel, training, and collaboration across the laboratory.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Guide and direct fundamental research associated with fuzing systems and report to industry partners, DoD stakeholders, and various funding organizations.
  • Perform modeling and simulation of design performance for unique concepts and technologies using Sierra/SM or other relevant finite element codes.
  • Analyze performance against requirements, build prototypes, and refine designs.
  • Coordinate with system customers, production agencies, and other stakeholders to support design, testing, development, qualification, and production activities.

Applicants chosen for an interview will be asked to provide an overview briefing of an example that illustrates relevant analysis experience.

The selected applicant can be a remote worker located in any U.S. State or District of Columbia. Regular or periodic travel to your assigned work location may be required.

Salary Range

$117,500 - $235,700

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require

  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Sigma 15 access
Qualifications We Desire

The ideal R&D S&E Mechanical Engineer candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:

  • Graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
  • Experience with mechanical engineering and product realization in the NNSA complex.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams

Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience/qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field
  • Experience with Sierra/SD, Sierra/SM, Zapotec, cth, or other DoD/DOE finite element codes for analyzing weapon systems and components in relevant mechanical environments.
  • Ability to propose new research, draft technical proposals, and communicate ideas effectively to stakeholders
  • Familiarity with DoD R&D funding organizations, such as the Joint Enhanced Munitions Technology Program (JEMTP) and Joint Munitions Program (JMP)
  • Experience working in Nuclear Deterrence and/or DoD weapons programs
  • Understanding of fuze and range safety standards, including MIL-STD-1316, RCC-319, and JOTP-052
  • Technical expertise in:
    • Electronics packaging strategies for survivability in military-grade shock environments
    • Material modeling techniques for representing common electronics packaging materials (e.g., solders, polymers, etc.) across all operating temperatures and strain rates
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers
  • Attention to detail in technical and administrative tasks
  • Active DOE Q clearance or equivalent active security clearance (e.g., DoD Top Secret)
