Departmental Overview

The School of Information (I School) advances knowledge and practice everywhere humans interact with digital technologies. Through interdisciplinary research and teaching we are committed to expanding access to information and to improving its usability, reliability, and credibility while preserving security and privacy. Our faculty conduct research in human-computer interaction (HCI), security and privacy, applied data science, and technology in developing regions.

We currently offer three professional master's degrees and an academic doctoral degree. Our Master of Information Management and Systems (MIMS) program trains students for careers as information professionals and emphasizes project-based learning. Our Master of Information and Data Science (MIDS) program is an online degree designed for working professionals with career goals in the emerging field of data science. The newly launched Master of Information and Cybersecurity (MICS), also offered online, offers a holistic approach to cybersecurity and prepares students for professional careers in cybersecurity. Our Ph.D. program equips scholars to develop solutions and shape policies that influence how people seek, use, and share information.

The Academic HR Analyst position is responsible for managing many aspects of the academic personnel process, as well as staff HR, for the School of Information (I School), under the direction and supervision of the Academic HR Manager. These responsibilities include coordinating contracts for the large Unit 18 lecturer population that teach in the I School's three degree programs, coordinating staff hires (career staff, ASEs, GSRs, and work study) with Berkeley Regional Services partner ERSO, processing requests and coordinating hires for visitors, and assisting the Academic HR Manager with academic personnel advancement cases and searches. Under guidance from the Academic HR Manager, the Academic HR Analyst also provides counsel to faculty and other academic staff on I School and University policies as related to various work problems and other inquiries. The Academic Personnel Analyst is responsible for enforcing and implementing I School and University policies across all aspects of their role.

The Academic HR Analyst plays a critical role in the support of the School of Information's academic staff population and the mission of the School and the University.

Responsibilities

  • Manages various aspects of Unit 18 lecturer population, including hiring, changes to appointments, advancement cases, policy, benefits eligibility, and leaves, with guidance from manager.
  • Staff hiring, including career staff, ASE, GSR, and work study hiring. Coordinates onboarding with Berkeley Regional Services partner, ERSO.
  • Assists manager with academic advancement cases, including determining and assembling case materials, assessing and summarizing data and comments from teaching evaluations, and drafting recommendation letters.
  • Under general supervision provides advice and guidance on documented faculty or other academic staff compensation programs, academic personnel policies and procedures.
  • Supports faculty search committees.
  • Processes visitor requests and coordinates appointment (fees, onboarding). Tracks visitors and updates Webmaster. Manages independent contractor hiring and volunteer appointments in collaboration with ERSO.
  • Under guidance from manager counsels faculty and other academic staff concerning work-related problems, work-eligibility (visa) matters such as J-1 processing, and benefits considerations.
  • Implements policies and programs in recruiting, instructional labor relations, wage and salary administration, and training.
  • Participates in continuing education and professional development to maintain and develop skills.
Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Analytical skills to conduct analysis and develop recommendations to I School Staff Leadership and the Dean's Office.
  • Demonstrated organization, problem solving, and strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to triage work based on priorities and time sensitivities
  • Ability to use business platforms like Google Workspace and MS Office.
  • Demonstrated ability to use sound judgment in responding to issues and concerns; ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to handle sensitive personnel information in compliance with established policies and procedures.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Basic knowledge of and ability to apply / interpret I School and University policies and procedures which govern academic HR.
  • Knowledge of I School and University formal and informal policies and procedures and understanding of variances to stated policies.
  • Knowledge of human resources management systems and other related business software programs and systems.
  • Knowledge of I School academic culture and educational goals of discipline(s) served.
