Summary:

This position is responsible for the effective leadership and management of the CHRISTUS St. Vincent Spiritual Care Department in accord with the Mission and Core Values of the CHRISTUS Health system.

To ensure that CHRISTUS St. Vincent's Spiritual Care services are conducted in compliance with national best practice standards and meet the highest standards in health care chaplaincy, this position is responsible for developing and maintaining a team that meets national certification standards. The manager is responsible for leadership of and advocacy for the Spiritual Care Department, including recruitment, interviewing, hiring and ongoing mentoring and supervision of chaplains; providing guidance in the budgeting process from planning to implementation to evaluation; providing opportunities for spiritual growth and development for Associates; and oversight of departmental volunteers. The manager will work collaboratively with other members of the Spiritual Care Department, directors of Spiritual Care in CHRISTUS Health, directors of departments within the region, physicians, hospital and health system leadership and management.

Responsibilities:


  • Directs the ministry of chaplains and manages coverage of chaplaincy services on a 24/7 basis through staffing, scheduling and supporting availability of chaplains. Assures that pastoral/spiritual care is provided in a manner that meets the age-specific and developmental needs of patients. Assures chaplaincy support in attending to end of life and assisting in the coordination of family visitation and care.
  • Develops and maintains departmental policies and procedures and provides ongoing leadership as to the standards of the department and professional standards of practice.
  • Works closely and in collaboration with all departments of the hospitals and clinics as a member of the treatment team in responding to the needs of patients and their families.
  • Administers the development of operational budget and prepares for submission to VP for approval; monitors spending on a monthly basis.
  • Manage the ministry of department volunteers. This involves assuring that volunteers are screened and administrative requirements met for them to provide assistance at CHRISTUS St. Vincent.
  • Participates as an active member of the Spiritual Care Council of CHRISTUS Health and leadership teams of CHRISTUS St. Vincent.
  • Participates on the CHRISTUS St. Vincent System Ethics Committee.
  • Serves as a liaison between the Catholic church the Catholic community and other faith communities locally. Facilitates department and hospital orientation for visiting clergy.
  • Oversees Associate Spiritual Care support services including the design and implementation of rituals, rounding, creating sacred spaces, Spa for the Soul, and the Lavender Cart.
  • Maintain compliance with CRISTUS St. Vincent Key Leader Behaviors.
  • Conduct orientation with new associates to provide training on Spiritual Care, Ethics and commissioning of new associates.
  • Coordinate Liturgical Worship and attending to events of the Liturgical Seasons (Lent, Ash Wednesday, Advent etc.) with Priest.

Requirements:

Education:


  • Master of Divinity or Masters in Theology from an accredited university or seminary. Minimum 4 units of Clinical Pastoral Education.

Experience:


  • Three years experience as a professional chaplain required; five years preferred. Two years experience as a department manager or leader preferred.
  • Knowledge of the healthcare environment with its challenges and opportunities
  • Ability to promote collaboration, open communication and team spirit
  • Ability to take initiative and accept responsibility
  • Ability to manage and oversee key functions of the Spiritual Care Department
  • Ability to provide effective pastoral/spiritual care
  • Skills in establishing and maintaining working relationships with hospital administrators, departmental leaders, Associates, and members of the community
  • Skills in organizing, writing and public speaking
  • Ability to effectively use goal setting techniques
  • Competence on personal computer and various programs and applications
  • Ability to use paging and telephone equipment.

Certifications, Registrations, or Licenses:


  • Member of the Roman Catholic Church (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Ethical and Religious Directives #22. Certification in Chaplaincy from National Association of Catholic Chaplain (NACC), Association for Professional Chaplains (APC),
