Job Description

The Office of Investments at the University of Missouri is responsible for the management of portfolios with total investment exposures of $12 billion. This position reports to the Chief Investment Officer ("CIO") and manages assigned components of the portfolios in accordance with investment policies established by the Board of Curators.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION
The successful candidate will have deep experience in several of the following asset classes: hedge funds, public equity, commodities, core fixed income, US treasuries, structured credit or private credit.

All members of the Investment Team are expected to work onsite in our Columbia, Missouri office five days per week. Flexible work arrangements are available for specific needs on a temporary basis.

The list that follows is not intended as a comprehensive list; it is intended to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities, Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed, and may be required to perform additional, position-specific tasks.

General Portfolio Management

  • Assists with asset allocation modeling exercises for each portfolio, helping the team meet investment objectives established by the Board of Curators,
  • Develops and executes strategic plans for assigned asset classes in support of overall portfolio investment objectives,
  • Helps manage and execute ongoing portfolio reviews, assessing performance, risks, diversification and correlations of portfolio components relative to expectations and objectives,
  • Assists with routine and strategic rebalancing of investment portfolios,
  • Evaluate results of risk monitoring systems for all three investment portfolios, working collaboratively with investment consultant on matters related to portfolio risk,
  • Assists with hiring, training and mentoring investment analysts and investment interns,
  • Maintains a thorough understanding of current investment markets,
  • Builds collaborative relationship with other team members and the external consultant to ensure strategic vision and goals of the portfolios are achieved,
  • Ensures project deadlines are met,
  • Identifies more efficient ways to accomplish existing tasks and recommend/implement changes and improvements,
  • Works collaboratively with investment operations to complete monthly accounting and performance reconciliations. Assists with annual financial audit as needed.

Investment Manager Monitoring / Selection / Due Diligence

  • Monitor and evaluate performance of investment managers, working in conjunction with investment consultant, as appropriate,
    • analyze both qualitative and quantitative risk and return metrics through the use of portfolio management and monitoring systems,
    • Make recommendations to the CIO regarding termination when investment managers are no longer fulfilling expectations,
  • Develops, manages, and deepens relationships with external investment managers,
  • Conducts diligence process on prospective investment managers:
    • Coordinate with external consultants,
    • Actively leads due diligence meetings via telephone, videoconference, and/or in-person,
    • Directs types of models and analysis required,
    • Identifies critical risk and return drivers,
  • Contributes to and generates new manager ideas, including:
    • Screening prospective funds for further research, including (1) reviewing presentation materials, and (2) considering the fit within the portfolios,
    • Interacting with members from external consultants,
    • Developing and maintaining relationships with marketers and peers,
  • Recommendation to the CIO regarding hiring of best qualified investment manager(s).
  • Responsible for complete hiring / termination process and approval documentation for all managers within assigned asset classes, including coordination with Office of General Counsel, external legal counsel, operations staff (internal and within investment custodian team).

TRAVEL
Frequent travel is required for due diligence visits, investment manager annual meetings and various investment conferences.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Direction is received from the Chief Investment Officer. Work is generally performed independently.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Supervision is exercised over investment analysts and interns.

Shift

Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Economics, Finance or Business Administration or similar degree is required and Minimum of eight years' experience in investment/financial analysis is necessary within some aspect of the institutional investment community, including demonstrated familiarity with financial markets.

Preferred Qualifications

MBA degree is preferred.
Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) strongly preferred.
Deep experience in several of the following asset classes: hedge funds, public equity, commodities, core fixed income, US treasuries, structured credit or private credit.

Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary is commensurate with education and experience
