Under the direction of the Assistant Director for Sustainability Programs, the Marketing Associate develops and implements marketing and communication tactics that strengthen the sustainability projects, programs and events within the Office of Planning, Sustainability and Project Management. This includes developing and executing an annual sustainable campus marketing plan, social media and communications management, to demonstrate the value of UIC's Climate Commitments and Climate Action Implementation Plan.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • As Sustainability's primary writer, develops and implements comprehensive marketing and communication campaigns and educational outreach events that have quantifiable objectives, methods, outcomes, and timelines for various audiences including faculty, staff, and students; event promotions, and outreach publications for conveying sustainability information and delivering a strong and consistent message to the campus community about UIC's sustainability achievements and the role of the campus community in advancing UIC's Climate Commitments of Zero Carbon, Zero Waste, Net Zero. Consults with UIC's Marketing and Brand Management.
  • Manages the production of monthly e-newsletter (Greenlights). Coordination with UIC's Office of Public Affairs for inclusion in broader campus communications such as UIC Today, events calendar, and news releases, in pursuit of strategic intent including design, layout and production of reports and promotional materials.
  • Creates and edits visual media and graphic elements of web pages for the Sustainability Team's dynamic website and other related websites as needed (e.g. Energy Conscious Campus). Utilizes best practices in web-design, UIC-provided framework (Word Press), creates content and webpages as requested by other team members who are also content providers.
  • Directs the Sustainability team's social media presence - through planned communications, response to current events on campus, in the community, and in the press. Stays current on social media in the marketplace and emerging platforms/tech/strategies.
  • Manages annual Giving Tuesday campaign for Sustainability Gift Fund. Coordinates with Advancement on initiatives related to Growing Green, an impact-based fundraising initiative, primarily by providing storytelling.
  • Provides support to the Chancellor's Committee on Sustainability and Energy by preparing presentation templates and designing the annual report.
  • Participates in the Office of Planning, Sustainability, and Project Management special projects and performs related duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications Required:

  1. Bachelor's degree in marketing, business administration, communications, public relations, or a closely related field.
  2. One (1) year (12 months) of professional work experience in marketing, public relations, communications, brand management, or a related professional area.
  3. Demonstrated copywriting, proofreading and editing skills.
  4. Demonstrated experience in translating complex information to non-technical audiences.
  5. Demonstrated experience using AP style writing.

Note: Master's Degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1) year (12 months) of work experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • 1-2 year experience with a marketing program, writing for websites, and news media.
  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Knowledge of principles and methods for promoting products or services that provide a social good. This includes marketing strategy and tactics.
  • Knowledge of media production, including social media platforms and efficiency of use, communication, and dissemination techniques and methods.
  • Contemporary social marketing theories with hands-on problem solving; knowledge of media production, communication, and dissemination techniques and methods; alternative ways to inform via written, oral and visual media.
  • Knowledge of social media analytics, social media publishing tools, web analytics, and tracking technologies.
  • Microsoft Office, presentation software, spreadsheet software, video creation and editing software, web page creation and editing software.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Skill in identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
  • Skill in time management, organizing work assignments, and responding quickly and effectively to challenges.
  • Abode Creative suite required.
  • Event planning.
  • Word press.
  • Best practices in website content design.
  • Ability to develop and execute marketing, and strategic communications plans to positively affect outcomes
  • Master's degree in Marketing and Communications; Social Marketing; Sustainability; or Environmental Studies.
  • 1-2 years experience in social marketing, with sustainability or social responsibility preferred.
  • 1-2 years experience in higher education or non-profit preferred.
  • Interest in and knowledge of sustainability issues such as climate change, loss of biodiversity, water issues, waste management, and diversity and equity preferred.
  • Strong presentation skills and excellent interpersonal skills preferred.
