About the Opportunity:

The Department of Housing Services is currently looking for a Senior Accounting Assistantto serve the mission ofcreating pathways out of homelessness, promoting housing stability, and investing in affordable communities for Washington County and our residents.

A Senior Accounting Assistant is a key member of our department who ensures the accuracy, integrity, and reliability of our financial records. This role handles moderately complex accounting tasks-from maintaining cost records and reconciling general ledger accounts to preparing journal entries, invoices, and audit schedules.

As the advanced journey-level position in the series, Senior Accounting Assistants are fully trained experts who manage the most technical duties, support financial operations across departments, and help interpret accounting policies and regulations. They often provide guidance to other staff, foster a collaborative and supportive work environment, and uphold consistent, high-quality financial practices that keep our organization running smoothly.

Ideal Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):

  • Maintain and balance complex financial records, ledgers, and accounts.

  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with various individuals and groups.

  • Interpret and apply federal, state, and local policies, procedures, laws, and regulations.

  • Perform technical accounting and bookkeeping work accurately and efficiently.

  • Communicate effectively with the public and staff, providing patient and professional customer service.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Possession of an Associate Degree in accounting, business, or related fieldANDtwo (2) or more years of work experience related to accounting, bookkeeping, or fiscal management;OR
  • Accounting Certificate (12 months)ANDthree (3) or more years of work experience related to accounting, bookkeeping, or fiscal management;OR
  • Five (5) or more years of work experience related to accounting, bookkeeping, or fiscal management.

Additional Requirements

  • Must pass a criminal background check post-offer.
