Department Summary

The UCLA International Institute educates students, supports scholarship on the world at UCLA and serves as a campus and community resource. With a history dating back to 1958, the Institute is the central hub for global and area studies on campus. Its more than 27 centers and programs support innovative multidisciplinary research on specific world regions and pressing global issues. Its rigorous academic programs offer degrees in global studies, international development, global health, international migration and diverse regions and countries of the world.
The UCLA International Institute is directed by a senior management team led by the Vice Provost for International Studies and Global Engagement, two Associate Vice Provosts and two Assistant Vice Provosts. The Office of the Vice Provost develops and implements UCLA's global strategy, manages the university's partnership agreements with foreign educational and research institutions, and represents UCLA to international constituencies and organizations.
Position Summary

The Global Data Analyst (GDA) is the coordinator for the collection, management, and visualization of UCLA's campus-wide global data. GDA identifies types of data to collect and develops standards for and executes data collection techniques. This position oversees larger data collection projects when applicable. This position must integrate and analyze collected data to produce actionable statistical reports. The GDA uses data visualization tools to create graphical data representations and reports visualized data to the Vice Provost, the Director for International Collaborations, and the IT Manager and Senior Web Developer. This position works to publicize UCLA's global engagement by providing visualized data for UCLA websites, social media accounts, and other platforms. Engage in front-end web development, coordinating with the webmaster to curate, display, and innovate ways of organizing data on the UCLA Global website. Communicate and collaborate with multiple campus units (particularly but not exclusively the constituent units of the International Institute) to provide support and maintain functionality for the website. Position will also assist Webmaster with the implementation, testing, maintenance and improvements of the centers' websites. Perform special projects as assigned.Also, train student staff to collect data and enter it in the Global Portal. Respond to student staff's work-related questions, comments, and concerns.

Qualifications

  • 1. Experience with: data collection, integration, analysis, HTML, .NET development, JavaScript, DHTML, CSS, amCharts, other data visualization tools. (Required)
  • 2. Strong verbal and written communication skills to disseminate information, deliver presentations, and solve a variety of problems with IT colleagues as well as clients with a wide range of technical backgrounds. (Required)
  • 3. Strong interpersonal skills to interface with co-workers, end-users, clients, and the public to assess needs, propose projects, and resolve conflicts effectively and diplomatically. (Required)
  • 4. Demonstrated project management skills to prioritize tasks, plan workflows, set milestones, and follow through to successful completion. (Required)
  • 5. Demonstrated skills in working with colleagues in collaborative environment within the IT team, as well as staff and clients both within and outside of the Institute. (Required)
  • 6. Ability to work with frequent interruptions and/or with short time lines for completion of projects. (Required)
  • 7. Experience in designing and implementing website layouts. (Required)
  • 8. Ability to evaluate and assess user interactions in order to create efficient and easy-to-use interfaces. (Required)
  • 9. Experience in developing web-based applications, specifically on Windows platforms, and knowledge of best practices for session handling, transaction processing, data manipulation and persistence. (Required)
  • 10. Knowledge of security principles, such as authorization, authentication, NTFS permissions, SQL Server permissions, encryption, and session management as related to securing IIS, MS SQL Server, and web applications. (Required)
  • 11. Experience with PHP, Perl, MySQL, and other web application environments. (Required)
