Clinical Laboratory Instructor HT/HTL Program

Position Summary:

Supports program administration of the School of Histologic Technicians, School of Histotechnologists, and/or School of Medical Laboratory Science. Responsible for daily coordination of student didactic and laboratory rotation schedules, learning activities and assessments. Assists the program director in maintaining the following: (1) school accreditation through the National Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences; (2) affiliation agreements with local universities and colleges; (3) clinical teaching time study data and annual cost reports for CMS audits; (4) graduate outcome data and (5) certification requirements through the American Society for Clinical Pathology. Reports to Education Programs Manager.

Essential Functions:

1. Assists in the development of curriculum for Schools.

2. Delivers theory lecture and laboratory exercises.

3. Develops laboratory rotation schedule, syllabus (rotation goals, competencies, objectives, and expectations), instructional activities and assessments (assignments/exams/performance evaluations) for the respective discipline.

4. Assists and advises students on research project, case study and/or other projects required by the program.

5. Evaluates student academic, technical and clinical performance. Counsels students related to their program, national certification and job pursuit.

6. Participates in student recruitment; student grievance procedures; university affiliation agreement document maintenance; student grade completion, as needed.

7. Assists in interviewing candidates, selecting students, and evaluating current student academic and technical performance.

8. Participates in respective School:

  • a. Faculty Meetings
  • b. Admission Committee
  • c. Advisory Committee
  • d. Assessment of Program Outcomes (response to student evaluations, annual course assessment, course modifications review/analysis, etc.)
  • e. Quarterly Clinical Time Studies and Annual Teaching Hour Report
  • f. NAACLS Accreditation Self-Study and Site Visit
  • f. Affiliation agreements with colleges, if applicable

9. Participates in respective Department:

  • a. C.Q.I./process improvements, data collection, QC documentation, patient safety initiatives
  • b. Staff activities of a High Reliability Organization (HRO)
  • c. Program Advisory Committee
  • d. Assessment of Program Outcomes with Program Director
  • e. Beaumont Laboratory Education Committee
  • f. Community service and career recruitment activities.

10. Cost effectiveness: Efficient use of time in completing tasks accurately and timely. Mindful of appropriate use of laboratory funds through purchase requests and the observance of wasteful use of supplies.

Qualifications (Histotechnology Only)

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. A. Education / Training:

  • Histotechnology: Baccalaureate degree (BA or BS). Preferred a graduate of a NAACLS-accredited Histotechnologist (HTL) program.

B. Work Experience:

  • Histotechnology: At least 3 years of experience working in a CLIA accredited histology laboratory. Immunohistochemistry experience preferred.

C. Certification, Licensure, Registration:

  • Histotechnology: HTL(ASCP)

D. Other Qualifications:

  • Skilled in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Problem solving ability, organizational and interpersonal skills. Demonstrates sincere interest in training students and continuing education activities in higher education methodologies and pedagogy
