DESCRIPTION

The Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute (ACTRI) is an NIH-funded Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) institution that provides the infrastructure to support high-quality and innovative translational research. ACTRI's vision is to translate scientific discoveries into improved health by delivering education, training and infrastructure for clinical research in the San Diego area and beyond. Mike Hogarth, M.D. and Davey Smith M.D. are the principal investigators on ACTRI's CTSA grant. The ACTRI functions under the direction of Gary S. Firestein, M.D., Director, and Senior Associate Vice Chancellor Health Sciences at UC San Diego.

This role supports the planning, implementation, and evaluation of federally funded research education and career development programs within the UC San Diego Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute (ACTRI). This position plays a key role in advancing the institute's mission to develop the next generation of clinical and translational scientists through structured training, mentorship, and workforce development initiatives.The incumbent manages multiple concurrent programs and activities, including pilot funding, K-series career development, and trainee education programs. Responsibilities include overseeing application cycles and review processes, coordinating program logistics, and maintaining accurate documentation and reporting to ensure compliance with NIH and institutional standards.

This role collects, analyzes, and summarizes program metrics to inform decision-making, contributes to NIH Research Performance Progress Reports (RPPRs), and supports data-driven continuous improvement efforts. They also assist with program communications serve as a liaison between ACTRI faculty, trainees, staff, and external stakeholders. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills are essential, as the role involves frequent collaboration with cross-functional teams, national CTSA networks, and institutional stakeholders.

Uses skills as a seasoned, experienced research compliance professional with a full understanding of industry practices and organization policies / procedures to apply federal, state, and university regulations, policies, and guidelines, and promote best practices. Interacts frequently with investigators, persons in other organizational departments, and occasionally persons outside the University. Interactions require the use of tact and independent judgment, knowledge of standards and best practices, and counseling to resolve a wide range of research compliance issues. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Errors or omissions may ultimately place research participant at undo risk and / or compromise the institution's assurance of regulatory compliance with the federal government.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Seven years of related experience, education/training, OR an Bachelor's degree in related area plus three years of related experience/training.

  • Solid knowledge of policy analysis techniques and federal compliance requirements, including NIH and NCATS policies and funding mechanisms.

  • Experience coordinating federally funded education or research programs, including K award and pilot funding initiatives.

  • Understanding of NIH grant mechanisms and processes, particularly K-series, R-series, and U-series awards.

  • Demonstrated self-discipline and sound, independent judgment completing complex assignments.

  • Thorough knowledge and ability to apply all relevant Federal, state, and university regulations, policies, and federal guidance documents.

  • Thorough knowledge and experience with quantitative and qualitative research design; scientific research concepts and terminology.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in public speaking, and writing.

  • Conflict of Interest: Understanding of stock options, consulting agreements and other corporate documents related to research and analysis of potential conflicts of interest.

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, discretion, and maintain strict confidentiality in handling sensitive information.

  • Proven experience in program management, grant administration, and compliance oversight within an academic or research setting.

  • Relevant compliance certification (if applicable), preferred.

  • Experience preparing and supporting compliance documentation (e.g., IRB materials, prior approvals, Just-in-Time submissions).

  • Familiarity with NIH systems such as xTrain, eRA Commons, and ASSIST for trainee appointments, reporting, and application support.

  • Familiarity with REDCap or similar data platforms for program management, reporting, and evaluation.

  • Experience contributing to grant proposals, including gathering materials, drafting components, and managing submission timelines.
