Dallas County Hospital District DBA Parkland Health has an opening for a Registered Dietitian-Nutrition Support Specialist in Dallas, Texas. Duties include:
- Evaluates all Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) requests for appropriate indications and possible alternatives which is reviewed with providers daily.
- Orders all TPN's daily including macronutrients, fluid, electrolytes, micronutrients, and insulin.
- Trains and mentors clinical dietitians, dietetic technicians, and student interns or trainees, or other assigned staff in the basics of providing quality nutritional care and services with a focus on critical illness, Enteral Nutrition, and TPN order writing, including electrolyte and insulin management.
- Provides nutrition care to critically ill patient population with emphasis in surgical/trauma, burns, neurological, cardiology, pulmonary, medicine and neonatology specialties. Accounts for medications, med/surgical procedures, and collaborates with interdisciplinary ICU team in providing individualized patient care.
- Participate in ICU medical rounds to promote efficient communication with providers and timely nutrition care to the patient. Participate in interdisciplinary rounds to facilitate timely discharge planning needs for patients.
- Works directly with physicians in shadowing RDs to learn about nutrition care process, Enteral Nutrition, TPN order writing.
- Works closely with pharmacy team and management in establishing appropriate medication usage with Total Parenteral Nutrition patients, especially during product shortages.
- Collaborates with Pharmacy management in reviewing new products related to Total Parenteral Nutrition administration and ICU care related to nutrition.
- Collaborates with outpatient Infusion companies to ensure appropriate inpatient parenteral infusions are in line with patient prescription/needs as well as facilitating transition from inpatient to outpatient Total Parenteral Nutrition care.
- Collaborates with Case Management/Social Work to ensure patient needs can be met to ensure safe discharge re: Tube feeding, Total Parenteral Nutrition.
- Attend seminars/workshops, reading professional journals, actively participating in professional organizations, and/or maintaining certification or licensure. Integrates knowledge gained into current work practices related to critical illness, enteral nutrition prescribing practices, Total Parenteral Nutrition order writing/product usages and mentors fellow clinicians re: current research-based practices.
- Participates on Nutrition Support Advisory committee to review enteral and parenteral nutrition products to establish research-based usages/guidelines for patient care.
- Participates in Nutrition Support Team rounds to provide best practice/most up to date recommendations for all TPN patients as well as to serve as an education opportunity for all team members.
- Provide evidence-based nutrition expertise to physicians and the interdisciplinary team focused on enteral and parenteral nutrition support including fluid, macronutrient, micronutrient, and electrolyte management as well as preventing complications such as refeeding syndrome.
- Participate in research projects within the unit to contribute to the nutrition and nutrition support body of knowledge to enhance current practices. Leading and/or supporting quality improvement projects as the nutrition support expert to incorporate evidence-based practices at our facility.
- Non-NICU NST: Core group of dietitians that act as super users for Cortrak feeding tube and Corgrip bridle placements and training of new dietitian/nursing staff for competency checkoffs. NICU NST: Core group of dietitians that obtain routine anthropometric measurements with accurate technique (trained measurers) to follow growth patterns and nutrition status for critically ill and at-risk neonates to help prevent malnutrition. Present monthly lectures to pediatric residents and/or neonatal fellows on the topic of parenteral and enteral nutrition support as well as provide daily guidance on evidence-based nutrition practices to resident.
Employer will accept a minimum of master's degree or foreign equivalent in food and nutrition or closely related field and 12 months of related dietetic experience in a hospital or comparable institutional setting. Experience should include the following:
- 12 months of experience in nutrition support or higher level of care.
- 12 months of experience in NICU with both enteral and parenteral nutrition
- 12 months of experience in neonatal care (through coursework or experience)
- Must be a registered dietitian with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (A.N.D.).
- Must be licensed to practice dietetics by the Texas Board of Dietitians.
- Must show evidence of the following or obtain within six months from date of hire: Certified Nutrition Support Clinician with the National Board of Nutrition Support Certification (NBNSC).
