POSITION TITLE: Intern - Office of Technology & Development

POSITION SUMMARY:

We have an exciting opportunity for an Intern supporting the Office of Technology Development (OTD) at Scripps Research in La Jolla, California, home to some of the world's most renowned scientists. This is a great opportunity for someone to join a nimble, highly dynamic, and motivated team that drives technology transfer of a world-class research organization. The candidate will work with the OTD team to support a focused Compliance Initiative, by reviewing executed agreements and assisting OTD in identifying, summarizing, and tracking contractual obligations such as reporting requirements, financial commitments, and key milestones.

This role is designed for a candidate with a legal or legal-adjacent background who is comfortable reading and interpreting agreements. The intern will work closely with OTD staff to support compliance tracking within OTD's database (Inteum), with the primary focus of this role being agreement analysis and compliance assessment.

This internship offers hands-on exposure to technology transfer, licensing operations, and compliance workflows at the intersection of science, law, and business.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:



  • Review executed agreements to identify reporting requirements, financial obligations, and other contractual commitments.
  • Prepare concise summaries of key agreement terms to support internal compliance tracking.
  • Assist in confirming the accuracy of existing agreement and obligation records.
  • Flag discrepancies, missed obligations, expired milestones, or unclear provisions for escalation to OTD staff.
  • Populate designated database with agreement and obligation data, in accordance with review guidelines, for subsequent review by OTD staff.
  • Identify agreements requiring progress reports and assist with documenting reporting requirements for follow-up.
  • Communicate clearly with OTD team members regarding issues requiring review or clarification.
  • Part-time: Up to 8-12 hours per week
  • This position is not eligible for benefits
  • The position is expected to last between 3-6 months.



POSITION REQUIREMENTS:



  • Currently enrolled in or completed a bachelor's or master's in Law, Legal Studies, Public Policy, Business, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to read, interpret, and summarize legal agreements.
  • Strong attention to detail and analytical skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook and Excel.
  • Business acumen



COMPENSATION:

The expected hiring range for this position is $17.80 - $35.00 per hour, commensurate with experience. Consideration will be given to experience that exceeds the listed requirements.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: May include: Stationary position for an extended period of time, traverse campus/facility as needed, operate machinery such as computer, phone, copy machine; exposure to cold or hot temperatures.
