A Building Performance Engineer will be responsible for modeling and analyzing building performance in terms of energy, water, daylight, thermal comfort, and related metrics. This work is done in coordination with our building design teams and also in support of energy consulting or post-occupancy activities. This position works across building types and market sectors, to include Federal/State/Local Government, education (higher education and K-12 schools), and commercial facilities. General responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Collaborating with architects & engineers to help projects achieve high performance outcomes
- Utilizing computer modeling software to simulate building performance (examples include energy modeling, daylight simulation, hygrothermal analysis, etc.).
- Serving as an information resource for project teams during the design process.
- Preparing graphics and authoring reports to communicate the results of analyses and studies.
- Presenting results to project teams and clients in formal and informal settings.
- Leveraging building physics expertise to advise project teams on the performance of their designs.
- Supporting energy consulting work, including, but not limited to: development of energy conservation measures for retrocommissioning or deep energy retrofit projects, providing third party reviews of energy performance contract performance.
- Supporting the reporting of project performance to the firm's AIA 2030 and MEP 2040 commitments.
- Coordinating with building commissioning professionals as required.
- Participating in team meetings and coordinating efforts with other team members
- Working with, responding to, and taking direction from senior engineers, project managers, managing principals, and operations directors.
Project responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Building energy modeling, ranging from simple box to compliance models.
- Life cycle cost analyses to inform high performance building design strategies.
- Participation in project team work sessions and client charrettes to identify high performance building strategies in support of design efforts.
- Authoring code compliance documentation for energy, carbon, and/or water performance.
- Assisting with preparation of fee proposals for building performance consulting work as directed.
- Building physics modeling (daylighting, hygrothermal analysis, thermal bridging analysis).
- Embodied and operational carbon calculations to inform design decisions.
- Authoring reports and presentations to relay performance outcomes and alternatives, for internal and external audiences.
- Authoring documentation for compliance with third party sustainability rating systems, including LEED, Green Globes, Energy Star, and related measures.

Required Experience
- Undergraduate and/or Master's Degree in Architecture, Engineering, or building physics-related field.
- EIT Certification is required.
- Pursuing Professional Engineer licensure (PE) within 48 months of being hired.
- Energy modeling experience using IES VE, Trane Trace, EnergyPlus, eQuest, Designbuilder, or equivalent software is required.
- Sustainability certifications such as LEED Accredited Professional, Well Accredited Professional, and/or Green Globes Professional are strongly encouraged.
- Design experience in architecture or building systems engineering is desirable.
- Building energy modeling and simulation certifications such as ASHRAE Building Energy Modeling Professional are strongly encouraged.
Working Conditions At JMT, we prioritize a healthy work/life balance and offer a flexible hybrid working schedule. JMT offers a hybrid work schedule. The selected candidate is expected to work in a JMT office location at least three days per week or as needed to perform assigned duties. While most of our work is desk-based, there may be times when standing, walking, bending and lifting of minimal weight are required. Our office environment is comfortable, has adequate lighting and temperature, and is free from noise, dust, and other hazards.
