JOB SUMMARY:
The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a non-profit, bipartisan public policy organization established in 1962 to provide strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decisionmakers concerned with global security and prosperity. Over the years, it has grown to be one of the largest organizations of its kind, with a staff of some 280 employees, including more than 120 analysts working to address the changing dynamics of international security across the globe.
The Deputy has the lead, day-to-day management responsibilities for all facets of the Africa Program, under the supervision and policy guidance of the Director. The position will also be expected to make regular substantive contributions to the central mission of the program, namely the sustainment of analytical and aggressive policy outreach programs on US policy towards Africa. The Director, charged with leading fund-raising efforts, program development and implementation of the program activities, will rely heavily upon the Deputy for ongoing substantive and managerial input.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the following:
I. Supports Program development by contributing to a fiscally sound Africa Program that is analytical, and substantially shapes discourse on US policy options towards Africa through:
* Drafting proposal concept papers.
* Developing new project initiatives.
* Arranging speakers and overseeing high-profile meetings and events.
II. Represents CSIS and Program in external relations by:
* Draft original commentaries, analysis, and reports; prepare project-related research products (including multimedia); and contribute to collaborative research and writing tasks, such as drafting of editorials and other opinion pieces
* Contribute to analysis of key emergent policy debates in Congress, the Executive Branch and among interest groups
* Take initiative to develop new writing, research, and project ideas.
* Develop work plans and timelines for research projects and coordinates both internal and outside experts to execute them on schedule.
* Contributing to the active cultivation of the external image of the CSIS Africa Program and its ongoing efforts to shape opinion
* Respond effectively to donor requests for timely briefings.
III. Supervises and counsels program staff by:
* Taking a lead role in sustaining high morale of the Africa Program team and ensuring appropriate emphasis on staff development.
* Conduct ongoing consultation and review of staff and intern work programs, performance, and emergent special projects.
IV. Assists with the budget process by:
* Drafting annual budget for approval of Program Director.
* Monitoring program revenue and expenses.
* Preparing financial updates.
KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:
* B.A./B.S. required. M.A./M.S. preferred.
* Minimum 3 years related experience in international relations or business, and knowledge of developments in Africa and US-Africa relations preferable.
* Ability to work closely with a range of individuals with diverse interests, backgrounds, and dispositions.
* Ability to write research reports, concept papers, business correspondence, etc.
* Must possess strong communication skills including the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from constituency groups, media, governmental entities, and the general public.
