The University of Virginia Darden School of Business, one of the world's leading business schools, seeks a Charlottesville, VA-basedDigitalAccessibility Specialist.This role supports faculty, staff, and students across our full-time and professional degree programs to ensure an accessible learning environment. The Digital Accessibility Specialist leads and sustains digital accessibility efforts with a primary focus on the academic digital environment, including courses, learning tools, and instructional media, and serves as a resource to other School units as capacity allows. This position emphasizes centralized stewardship-establishingstandards, workflows, training, and governance-enabling accessibility to be integrated into ongoing content creation and institutional operations. This role provides centralized leadership,expertise, and hands-on support for digital accessibility while coordinating and enabling distributed remediation and accessible content creation acrossDarden. It requires initiative, organization, change management, and problem-solving skills. This role reports to the Director of Instructional Design and Assessment and is a hybrid position with a blend of on-grounds and work-from-home. Responsibilities:
Lead school-wide digital accessibility initiatives to ensure compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act Title II requirements (WCAG 2.1 AA Guidelines), with primary and sustained focus on the academic digital environment and phased expansion to support other units as capacity allows Audit and document the accessibility of Canvas courses, assessments, and learning tools, and coordinate, prioritize, and support remediation workflows, including direct remediation whereappropriate Develop and manage a sustainable process for accessible digital asset creation, including faculty, staff and studenttoolkits,templates,and quality review workflows Partner with the Video Production team to lead and manage audio description development for new and archival instructional video content, including evaluating and adopting emerging technologies Serve as an accessibility resource and collaborator forDarden'sVideo Production,Business Publishing, IT, Marketing and Communications, Admissions, Career, and other units to support accessible web, media, and digital content as institutional needs and capacity permit Coordinate and track digital accessibility budget needs and expenditures Assistin the procurement process by reviewing Voluntary ProductAccessibility Templates (VPATs) and conducting risk assessments for digital tools Conduct trainingand provide resourcesfor faculty, staff, and studentsto build accessibility fluencyandsupport accessible content creation Track, document, and report progress toward digital accessibility compliance benchmarks, including ongoing maintenance as academic content is revised and updated across terms Stay current with accessibility laws,includingADA Title IIupdates, and assistive technologystandards andbest practices Collaborate with colleaguesat Darden andacross Grounds, includingwith the University's Coordinator of Academic Accessibility, theStudent Disability and Access Center (SDAC), Learning Design and Technology (LDT),andthe Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE)topromote accessible learning experiences
Required Education & Experience:
Bachelor's degree and at least two years of relevant experiencerequired Master's degree preferred, preferably in disability and accessibility services, instructional design, instructional technology, or a related field
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge ofADA compliance laws,WCAG 2.1standards,andassistive technologies in higher education settingsstrongly preferred Accessibility experience, including digital accessibility support; faculty/staff development; teaching, administration, or disability support in an educational setting preferred IAAP certification (e.g.,CPACC, WAS) or other digital accessibility qualification preferred Proficient with document remediation tools (UDOIT, Adobe Acrobat Pro,Equidox) and familiar with assistive technologies (screen readers, voice recognition software, audio description tools), including applying these tools directly and training others in their effective use Awareness of accessible procurement processes and reviewing VPATs Experience managing complex, multi-stakeholder projects, including prioritizing work,establishingtimelines, tracking tasks, and ensuring progress across distributed contributors Demonstratedhigh levelof professionalism, customer service, attention to detail, follow-through, teamwork,flexibilityand positive attitude Comfortable leading professional development workshopsfor faculty and staff Ability to work effectively with individuals from various educational,culturaland professional backgrounds toestablishand maintain strong partnerships Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills, includinglistening with empathyto understand and surface needsand the ability toconvey complex ideas andpotentialsolutions toa range of stakeholders
