| Organizational Unit Overview |
The Department of Pediatrics is one of the largest clinical departments within the East Carolina University School of Medicine. The mission of the Department is to provide quality patient care, to teach medical students and residents, and to do research. It consists of 16 sections, Pediatric Outpatient Center, and laboratories (research and clinical), The sections of the Department are: Administration; Adolescent; Developmental/Behavioral Pediatrics; Developmental Evaluation Clinic; Endocrinology; Gastroenterology; General; Genetics; Hematology/Oncology; Infectious Disease; Neonatology; Nephrology; Neurology; and Rheumatology. The Department is funded from State appropriated monies, practice plan generated income, and by grants awarded.
It is the mission of the Department of Pediatrics, East Carolina University School of Medicine, to provide exemplary medical education/training of physicians in pediatric medicine at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Additionally, it is the mission of the department to provide model comprehensive primary and consultative subspecialty care to children of eastern North Carolina, to advance scientific knowledge through basic and clinical research, and to provide continuing medical education opportunities for physicians in the region. The achievement of this mission requires a full faculty commitment to the goals and operations of the Department of Pediatrics, the East Carolina University School, Brody School of Medicine. Brody School of Medicine operates within
ECU Health under a joint operating agreement. |
| Job Duties |
The Child Life Specialist provides comprehensive Child Life services to pediatric hematology and oncology patients and families in the outpatient clinic and affiliated
ECU Health settings. This position functions as an integral member of the interdisciplinary care team and supports clinical care, education, and program development.
* Conducts developmental, psychosocial, and coping assessments and develops individualized Child Life care plans
* Provides preparation, education, and procedural support for medical procedures using developmentally appropriate interventions
* Delivers therapeutic play, medical play, and expressive activities to promote coping, development, and emotional well-being
* Documents assessments, interventions, and patient progress in the electronic health record and communicates findings to the care team
* Provides emotional support, education, advocacy, and referrals for patients and caregivers, including coordination with community resources
* Participates in interdisciplinary meetings, patient care conferences, and clinic operations to support high-quality patient care
* Selects, orients, supervises, and evaluates Child Life practicum students, interns, volunteers, and observers in accordance with certification standards
* Develops and maintains Child Life training materials, manuals, and educational resources
* Plans and conducts Child Life educational in-services and contributes to staff and community education efforts
* Collaborates with
ECU Health Child Life programs and clinic leadership to ensure continuity of care and program alignment
* Assists with planning and implementation of patient programs, camps, special events, and community awareness initiatives
* Maintains Child Life certification and required continuing education
* Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor, division chief, or program director

Employment in this position provides eligibility to participate in the
UNC Optional Retirement Program (
ORP) which offers matching employer contributions and employee control of investment choices, along with eligibility to participate in various Voluntary Supplemental Retirement Plans (401k, 403b, 457). This position is not eligible to participate in the NC Teachers' and State Employees' Retirement System (
TSERS). Additionally, this position offers multiple voluntary options for Medical, Dental, Vision, and Life Insurance as well as various supplemental plans including Critical Illness, Flexible Spending Accounts, Cancer, and Disability.
While this position is not automatically eligible for the NC Teachers' and State Employees' Retirement System (TSERS), new hires transferring from another North Carolina state agency and current ECU employees transferring internally who had been enrolled in TSERS in their previous employment will continue participation in TSERS. These individuals may be able to elect to participate in ORP if they had not been offered that option at the time of their initial enrollment into TSERS.

Bachelor's or Master's degree in the therapeutic specialty area to which assigned. Some positions may require additional training, certifications, or licensure in speech pathology, audiology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, or other fields. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |
