The Small Animal Emergency Service is located in the Veterinary Medical Center's (VMC) Lewis Small Animal Hospital on the St. Paul Campus of the University of Minnesota. The Emergency Service provides small animal (canine & feline) services 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. The Emergency Service triages and treats patients from other services of the VMC and patients of the local community through walk-in and referral appointments. VMC faculty members provide collaborative clinical services using cutting-edge equipment and fostering an optimal environment for clinical training. This position consists of primary small animal emergency case receiving in partnership with faculty, house officers, senior veterinary students, and veterinary technicians and assistants to ensure a high standard of patient care and clinical education. In addition to receiving, the clinician will be involved with assisting interns with patient questions, delivering clinical instruction of veterinary students rotating through the Emergency/Critical care service, offering consultations on ICU cases as needed, and communicating with referring DVMs regarding potential referral cases. The ER clinician will be able to perform sedated common surgical procedures, with an on-call surgical team available to manage emergent celiotomies, thoracotomies, and other advanced interventions as indicated. Nightly collaboration with the faculty in the Urgent Care service enhances our ability to provide targeted, high-quality care by distinguishing true emergent scenarios from urgent conditions. Additional collaborative resources include after-hour phone consultations with various VMC specialists to provide superior standards in patient management and clinical instruction. This position is a clinical service and clinical teaching appointment within the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences. There may be future opportunities to engage in additional areas of interest, including research and didactic teaching, depending on faculty interest and departmental needs.
