JOB SUMMARY:

The Medical Surgical Nurse Manager is a registered nurse who functions as a patient care provider, supervisor and clinical resource for staff. The Nurse Manager implements management and clinical activities. Coordinates clinical activities to ensure that the nursing process is operationalized utilizing Standards of Care/Standards of Practice. Primary responsibilities include ensuring the provision of patient care consistent with department/hospital and regulatory standards.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:


  • Performs management duties in collaboration with the nurse director to achieve and maintain quality services and positive employee relations.

  • Assumes overall unit management within established policies, procedures, labor and supply budgets in the absence of the nurse director.

  • Supervises (hires, evaluates, and disciplines) all RN and non-RN staff according to established personnel policies, procedures and union contracts. Develops staff assignments and schedules. Promotes and facilitates staff professional development and clinical competency

  • Initiates and facilitates problem solving by timely identification and communication of staff and patient care issues and solutions to nurse director. *

  • Assures that staff schedules are completed and posted in accordance with nursing department policies, procedures and union contract requirements.

  • Acquires, maintains, and utilizes knowledge of current labor contracts and personnel policies and procedures, initiates timely and appropriate management interventions, inclusive of coaching, counseling and progressive discipline. *

  • Works collaboratively with Human Resources/Labor Management staff as needed.

  • Conducts independent investigation of employee's incidents involving clinical practice issues including review of employee personnel file, discipline record and evaluations. Imposes appropriate disciplinary action when needed.

  • Promotes own professional development by attendance at conferences with a management/clinical focus.

  • Provides patient care as needed.

  • Works collaboratively with the nurse director/clinical instructor to establish, facilitate and coordinate a preceptor program.

  • Participates in quality improvement activities and on committees to ensure that Standard of Care/Practice are evaluated and met. Completes unit-based quality improvement/risk management projects in collaboration with the nurse manager.

  • Participates in assigned committees and communicates timely information to nurse director and staff.

  • Facilitates unit based, approved research projects. Promotes practice that is in compliance with appropriate statues and regulations (i.e., DPH, Joint Commission, OSHA, etc.).

  • Coordinates clinical activities to ensure safe and efficient functioning of the unit based on patient needs.

  • Performs other duties as needed.


REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:


  • Bachelor's degree in nursing

  • 5 years of relevant clinical experience

  • Training in Performance Improvement, total Quality Management, and/or Continuous Quality Improvement


PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Master's Degree preferred

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:


  • Current license to practice Nursing in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts

  • ACLS certification (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) & BLS certification (Basic Life Support)


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:


  • Ability to effectively manage expense budget as allocated.

  • Ability to make formal presentations relative to clinical, operational, educational research and financial issues

  • Ability to problem-solve and work collaboratively towards defined patient care outcomes.

SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS:


  • 24hr coverage, on call.

  • Must obtain 15 hours of Continuing Education annually to maintain license


Compensation Range:

$113,500.00- $164,500.00

This range offers an estimate based on the minimum job qualifications. However, our approach to determining base pay is comprehensive, and a broad range of factors is considered when making an offer. This includes education, experience, skills, and certifications/licensures as they directly relate to position requirements; as well as business/organizational needs, internal equity, and market-competitiveness.
