Essential Job Duties
The Lab Manager - Biotech Teaching is responsible for maintaining classroom laboratory facilities. Such responsibilities include the maintenance and running of equipment, coordination of inventory, storage, and maintenance of supplies and lab instruments necessary to the educational lab operations, functioning as the facilities liaison and safety representative. Classroom support is required, including reagent and materials preparation for courses and program outreach events. This role is key to tying together the faculty and students in a broad yet deep educational endeavor that supports a high level of excellence in laboratory education.

As safety representative and facilities liaison, this position works with university-wide offices to ensure we are maintaining a safe environment for students, faculty, and staff while providing a high level of academic programming. This position supports teaching of students campus-wide, predominantly from CALS, COE, CVM, and COS.


  • Organization and Operation of BIT Teaching Labs

    • Maintain supplies and reagents: ensure sufficient levels of materials, monitor inventory of stocks, and work with the Business Officer to ensure orders are requested in sufficient time to receive for courses. Follow the university's best practice of ensuring the best pricing for materials needed on each order
    • Maintain a chemical inventory list and arrange proper disposal with the Department of ESH
    • Maintain lab equipment in working order, maintaining relationships with maintenance and repair representatives, including groups performing annual Planned Maintenance Agreements for some equipment, to schedule around classes when possible, and in coordination with the Business Officer for payment or sending invoices
    • Serve as Capital Asset Coordinator to add new equipment and maintain inventory annually
    • Work as a team with faculty and instructors to ensure that all understand and follow the organizational systems created
    • Preparation of materials for BIT 410/510 ("Core Course") lab sections
    • Assist instructors with advanced lab classes if time allows




  • Safety Officer

    • Ensure that lab spaces are all in agreement with current university health and safety specifications
    • Ensure that faculty, instructors, and students follow safety regulations within all laboratory spaces, including the appropriate use of PPE at all times
    • Briefly instruct classes on safety requirements at the start of each course



  • Building and Facilities Liaison

    • Ensure that the program facilities are maintained at a high standard; coordinate with housekeeping and facilities for repairs, renovations, and upkeep by using university systems to request necessary assistance. Ensure notices and materials on display are current
    • Serve as one of the building liaisons for information related to ongoing projects that may affect access to the building, keeping faculty and staff apprised of any major impacts, and maintain relations with other programs in the building
    • Manage distribution and inventory of keys to any program rooms or offices; ensure return of keys as appropriate



  • Team Participation

    • Attend weekly group meetings with faculty and staff
    • Willingness to participate in outreach programs as available (ex., NC School for the Deaf and University Open House) to represent the Program to families and prospective students



  • Supervision of undergraduate laboratory assistants
    • Train and supervise undergraduate students to assist with lab prep or cleanup as needed; monitor and approve working hours


Other Responsibilities

  • Serve as the main point of contact with vendor sales representatives
  • Maintain inventory of capital assets through the university system
  • Help select undergraduate student laboratory assistants, monitor and assign tasks, and coordinate their work in conjunction with instructor's needs

Qualifications






Minimum Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in molecular biology or related field required; master's degree or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of lab safety practices and sterile technique is essential.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of biotechnology research materials, equipment, reagents, and mammalian cell culture sterile technique.
  • Familiarity with standard molecular biology equipment and tools, and a desire to learn maintenance and running of analytical equipment.
  • Organizational and communication skills, as well as the ability to work within a varied team setting, are essential.
  • This position coordinates inventory, storage, and maintenance of supplies and lab instruments necessary to the lab operations, as well as supporting ordering in coordination with the Business Officer.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in a Life Science or related field preferred.
  • Experience working in a research laboratory environment.
  • Candidate must be highly organized.
