General Description:

Under general supervision, performs specialized technical procedures and allied duties related to the function of the human milk pasteurization laboratory at the Mother's Milk Bank of Iowa, Department of Food and Nutrition Services. Maintain aseptic laboratory area and equipment.

The schedule is mostly 2 days/week, Fridays and TBD, 8:30a-5p

Beginning hourly salary is $18.72/hr.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:

- Perform human milk pasteurization activities at the Mother's Milk Bank of Iowa, Department of Food and Nutrition Services.

- Perform specialized and focused technical duties that are essential for pasteurization of human milk, maintain the integrity of its immunological and nutritional properties and adhere to the Holder method, HMBANA Standards and principles of food safety and sanitation.

- Collect, log in, prep, thaw, pool, transfer to flasks, strain, aliquot, pasteurize, cool, label and store donor human milk.

- Perform data entry, prepare and maintain milk bank records, distribute and maintain supplies.

- Clean and aseptically maintain the pasteurization laboratory and equipment, sanitize labware, monitor Temp Trak and freezer/refrigerator temperatures, report maintenance and other issues.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

- Knowledge of care and use of laboratory equipment.

- Knowledge of principles of sanitation, food safety, health hazards, and the necessary precautionary measures.

- Ability to strictly perform and follow specialized lab procedures according to instructions and SOPs.

- Ability to accurately follow oral and written instructions.

- Attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.

- Knowledge of keyboarding and computer data entry skills.

- Ability to use proper lifting (up to ~25 lbs.) and bending techniques.

- Ability to communicate effectively with others.

- Ability to collect data, keep accurate records, and prepare reports.

- Ability to count, add, subtract, multiply, divide and determine percentages.

- Ability to perform aseptic techniques.

- Ability to organize and prioritize tasks.

Desirable Qualifications:

Two years of laboratory experience including one year as Laboratory Technician I or equivalent level of experience, or

Certified Laboratory Assistant (CLA) certification, or

Any combination of related post high school education and experience which totals two years.
