What to Expect
The Senior Dimensional Engineer is responsible for ensuring that vehicle components and assemblies meet dimensional quality targets and tolerances throughout the product lifecycle. In this position you will lead dimensional control strategies, analysis and dimensional improvements and adjustments to achieve fit, finish, craftmanship specs and functional requirements across BIW, closures, and other major assemblies.
The Senior Dimensional Engineer will work and report to Dimensional Engineering Manager. Working closely with Production Teams, Sustaining Engineering team, Controls team and Maintenance to understand, help define and ensure lines are following body accuracy, improving the process and cycle times. From these key indicators, the candidate will be responsible for drive actions back to body lines, working with the Dimensional engineering Techs and the dimensional group.
The Senior Dimensional Engineer will work collaboratively with the Dimensional Staff performing dimensional investigations as well as support Design, Process and Manufacturing groups to validate part quality and tooling setups changes.
What You'll Do
- Analyze each of the measurement reports to develop action plans for the continuous dimensional improvement of the assemblies of Underbody, bodysides, closures, BIW, and final line
Develop/Manage the list of critical product and process characteristics and controlling their geometry in BIW to produce quality assemblies and maintaining the Shims Log, Change log, Carpet Data and Dimensional Management daily as part of the internal KP's of the MY BIW dimensional engineering team Provide daily production support on Dimensional and quality concerns and develop and implement short/long-term countermeasures to quality problems while maintaining operational efficiency Standardize progress by developing, deploying, and training others on dimensional engineering Team and best practices Support parts and system validation processes for all body geometry and proactively lead variation reduction efforts for the body shop and review and follow Supplier parts to ensure zero-dimensional build issues Own and maintain current Geo accessories and critical fixtures to ensure excellent performance for the process and assemblies Work closely with Metrology Team to comply with the control plan and obtain necessary data and implement a plan to close any gaps in measurements Provide expertise to support improvement projects (Quality, dimensional, cycle time, efficiency, safety, etc.) Provide expertise on GD&T best practices and actively work with Quality and Design engineers to make sure that datum scheme and tolerances are accurate for the form, fit and function of the assemblies
What You'll Bring
10 years of relevant experience Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or equivalent experience Excellent communication and interpersonal skills at all levels of an organization and strong analytical and problem-solving skills Hands-on experience with fixture designs, checking aids and datum strategies and excellent knowledge of GD&T and ability to create datum strategies that minimize tolerance stack-up in critical areas Manufacturing/assembly experience with a focus on one or more of the following areas: Automotive Stamping, Body in White assemblies/subassemblies, Drivetrain castings/gears, Battery modules Results driven with a Quality mindset and willingness to work in a strong cross-functional and collaborative environment Strong mechanical intuition and extensive hands-on experience modifying tooling and fixtures Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and make correction if needed and experience with CAD design software (CATIA is a must) Experience using measurement tools for root cause diagnostics (stationary and portable CMMs, Faro laser tracker, Leica 3D scanner, Polyworks) Strong understanding of statistics to identify critical process parameters and ability to present simple solutions to complex problems and influence key change directives to other engineering teams
