Position Highlights

The Outreach Instructional Specialist's major responsibilities will be coordinating Coconino County Cooperative Extension's agricultural literacy professional development training for K-12 teachers. This includes outreach and participant recruitment, managing the online portion of the training, coordinating travel and lodging for immersive learning experiences on local farms, implementing curricular workshops, and gathering data for program evaluation. Other duties may include assisting with food preservation and nutrition education programming as needed.

This is an Extended Temporary Employment (ETE) position.

Duties & Responsibilities
  1. Participant recruitment for, and management of, a hybrid class developed to assist teachers in integrating agricultural topics into their class curricula. Targeted participants are K-12 teachers in Coconino County and across northern Arizona, including participants from Gila, Navajo, Apache, and Mohave counties. The online portion of the class is seven weeks and offered through D2L, UA's learning management system. This course is offered 4 times per year. Gathering participant data needed for program evaluation is another important aspect of this duty.
  2. Coordinate logistics: At the conclusion of each 7-week online portion of the class, participants will participate in an immersive weekend learning experience on local farms. This position is responsible for identifying farms for these hands-on experiences for teachers, including organizing travel and lodging for participants and organizing a workshop to assist teacher participants in developing curricular resources pertinent to agricultural topics.
  3. Support Northern Arizona educators as they work toward increasing agricultural knowledge for their student population. This will entail outreach to past program participants ensuring they have the resources they need for this objective, including purchasing agricultural curriculum and other items needed for teaching agricultural topics in their classrooms.
  4. Support FCHS Extension program: This position also supports the Family, Consumer, and Health sciences program for Coconino County. Duties include school garden and nutrition education and food preservation classes mostly in Flagstaff and surrounding communities within Coconino County.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of agricultural production in Northern Arizona.
  • Ability to manage informal educational programs.
  • Familiarity with networks of classroom educators, public school districts, private/charter schools, and other northern AZ formal education efforts.
  • Familiarity with managing on line content.
  • Experience with public speaking and outreach.
  • Ability to implement established Extension programs, or similar educational experience.
  • Ability to intermittently work weekends and evenings.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through experience required.
  • One year of relevant work experience.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Northern Arizona agricultural production, schools, and other Extension stakeholders.
  • Experience managing a hybrid online/in-person educational programs and learn to use the University of Arizona D2L system.
