About the Job

The Natural Resources Research Institute was established by the Minnesota legislature in 1983 as an applied science and engineering research organization to inform state citizens and decision-makers while leveraging the power of the University of Minnesota. NRRI is guided by the forward-looking charter provided by the Legislature to foster the economic development of Minnesota's natural resources in an environmentally sound manner to promote private sector employment.

Job Duties/Responsibilities:

  • (70% time) Extract DNA from samples collected on MnDOT Bats in Bridges project, MITPPC Terrestrial Invasives project, and the new moose project.
  • (10% time) Directed analysis of DNA data from UM Genomics Center and development of map graphics using ArcMap.
  • (10% time) Editing jpg images with Photoshop or Gimp
  • (10% time) Working on other projects Moen and Grinde are Pis for as assigned
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • B.S. or B.A. from accredited university or a combination of education and work experience equal to 4 years
  • GPA > 3.33
  • Valid drivers license

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience extracting DNA from animal and/or plant samples
  • Experience with Adobe Photoshop and/or Gimp Fieldwork on a research project collecting samples and data Able to use MS Office applications.
  • Experience with analyzing data using R Experience using GPS units to navigate to field sample locations
  • Experience using canoe (transport, paddle, and portage)
  • Work on a project doing fieldwork/research conducted in northeastern Minnesota.

With industrial-scale facilities in Duluth and Coleraine, MN, NRRI works across five strategic research platforms. These platforms address Minnesota's soil, forest, water and mineral resources:

  • Data Collection and Delivery
  • Commercialization Services
Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $20 per hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience.
