By Act of the North Carolina State Legislature in 1946, the Minerals Research Laboratory was chartered to perform research and development and promote the minerals of North Carolina and to better develop the mining industry of North Carolina. Since then, the
MRL has expanded to include service for clients from across the United States and around the world. The
MRL is an extension of the Industrial Extension Service of the College of Engineering. The MRL's mission is the same as the Industrial Extension Service: to be a statewide, university-affiliated organization partnering with North Carolina industry as a catalyst for the transfer of knowledge and technology in support of economic development. The laboratory performs applied research that enables companies and communities to exploit the mineral resources in their areas. |

| Essential Job Duties |
The Research Technician plays a key role in supporting mineral processing engineers and research scientists on a wide range of mineral separation and characterization projects. Working both independently and collaboratively, this position conducts laboratory testing on mineral samples, evaluates appropriate separation techniques, performs batch flotation tests, and contributes to pilot plant operations that support research and industrial applications. The role also oversees Environmental Health and Safety (
EHS) activities for the Mineral Research Laboratory (
MRL) and manages laboratory purchase orders to ensure smooth and compliant operations.
Success in this position requires strong technical aptitude, attention to detail, and a commitment to maintaining safe and efficient laboratory practices. The technician will work closely with colleagues, adapting to changing project needs, communicating clearly, and contributing to a collaborative and solutions-oriented work environment.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct laboratory tests on mineral samples and determine appropriate mineral separation techniques.
- Perform batch flotation tests and participate in pilot plant operations.
- Support development of industrial mineral processing implementation strategies.
- Coordinate Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) activities for the Mineral Research Laboratory (MRL).
- Manage laboratory purchase orders and maintain accurate documentation.
- Collaborate with senior engineers, research scientists, and co-workers to support ongoing research projects.

Qualifications
| Minimum Experience/Education |
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. |
| Preferred Qualifications |
- Demonstrated knowledge of chemistry, physics, and mathematics as applied to mineral processing.
- Proficiency using laboratory equipment and conducting technical laboratory procedures.
- Experience in laboratory or research environments, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability to work independently within established procedures and adapt to changing schedules and deadlines.
- Strong teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills in a collaborative research setting.
