Position Highlights

The W.A. Franke Honors College, at the University of Arizona, seeks an Academic Advising Professional II to join our collaborative advising team. The W.A. Franke Honors College serves more than 4,000 students representing every undergraduate college at the University of Arizona. Our academic advisors provide proactive, developmental, and holistic advising that supports each student's academic, personal, and professional growth.

The Academic Advising Professional II serves as a frontline contact for students in an assigned cohort, providing academic guidance on Franke Honors College requirements and opportunities. Advisors in the college also serve as primary academic advisors for students in Franke Honors academic programs, including the Bachelor of Creative Intelligence and Innovation (BCII), Creative Intelligence and Innovation (CII) minor, Future Earth Resilience (FER) minor, Health and Human Values (HHV) minor, and the Honors Civic Leadership Certificate (HCLC).

This position requires strong communication skills, high attention to detail, and a genuine commitment to supporting student success across all disciplines. The advisor will collaborate extensively with Franke Honors College faculty and staff, advising colleagues across campus, and campus-wide offices such as the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid, the Bursar's Office, Student Engagement & Career Development, Think Tank, Thrive Center, Salt Center, Disability Resource Center, and others.

There may be occasional evening and weekend work for student-related events.

Duties & Responsibilities

Academic Advising, Student Support, and Retention:

  • Provide individualized, developmental academic advising to undergraduate students in the Franke Honors College.
  • Advise students on Franke Honors curriculum requirements, academic policies, and progress toward graduation.
  • Serve as the primary academic advisor for Franke Honors academic programs including BCII, CII minor, FER minor, HHV minor, and the Honors Civic Leadership Certificate.
  • Support students in defining academic, professional, and personal goals and developing realistic academic plans.
  • Assess students' developmental stages and provide tailored academic guidance and referrals to appropriate campus resources.
  • Contribute to student retention efforts through proactive support, intervention, and ongoing advising relationships.

Records Management, Systems Use, and Proactive Outreach:

  • Utilize UAccess, Trellis, Analytics, and related university systems to monitor student progress and maintain accurate advising records.
  • Review and process course substitutions, petitions, degree plans, and curriculum adjustments.
  • Conduct proactive outreach through advising campaigns and targeted communication based on student data and progress indicators.
  • Communicate timely, accurate, and professional information to students via email and advising systems.

Collaboration, Communication, and Campus Engagement:

  • Collaborate with Franke Honors faculty and staff, campus advising colleagues, and university partners to support student success.
  • Participate in college events, recruitment initiatives, and student-facing programming.
  • Support honors-related processes including honors contract review, honors thesis tracking, scholarship review, and application review.
  • Present advising-related information and training to students, faculty, and staff.
  • Mentor junior advisors and assist with onboarding and training of new advising staff.

Program Development and Continuous Improvement:

  • Identify trends, needs, and challenges within the student population using qualitative and quantitative data.
  • Recommend strategies to improve advising services, student engagement, and retention outcomes.
  • Assist with the design and facilitation of advising workshops, outreach efforts, and information sessions.
  • Participate in continuous professional development to strengthen advising practices, student engagement strategies, and effective use of technology.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of theories and approaches related to academic advising, teaching, or counseling in higher education.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write clear, professional student communications.
  • Proactive, empathetic, and student-centered approach to advising.
  • Effective organizational and time-management skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, and colleagues across the university.
  • Ability to learn and apply new policies, procedures, and technologies quickly.
  • Familiarity with student development theory and holistic advising practices.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through experience required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a field related to higher education, advising, or student affairs.
  • Experience providing academic advising or related student support services in higher education.
  • Knowledge of University of Arizona advising systems and procedures.
  • Knowledge of General Education and Franke Honors curriculum requirements at the University of Arizona.
  • Proficiency with University of Arizona systems and tools, including UAccess, Trellis, Analytics, Qualtrics, Microsoft 365, and Google Workspace.
  • Experience working with high-achieving, interdisciplinary, or honors student populations.
  • Experience writing and managing high-volume student communications.
