The Animal Care Technician I supports the university's Animal Care Facilities, Science Center stockrooms and hazardous-waste operations, and Biology teaching laboratories. This position plays an essential role in maintaining high standards of animal care, laboratory readiness, and scientific safety. Responsibilities include performing daily animal husbandry and facility sanitation; monitoring equipment and environmental conditions; maintaining supply inventories; supporting breeding programs and research activities; assisting with stockroom organization, receiving, and hazardous-waste handling; conducting routine safety inspections; managing the liquid nitrogen supply; and helping prepare, set up, and take down instructional laboratory materials. The role requires regular use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), completion of required training, and participation in a rotating schedule that includes occasional weekend or holiday shifts. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with faculty, staff, research personnel, and facilities teams to ensure smooth, safe, and compliant operations across all assigned areas. This position is a project appointment and intended to last for at least two years and may be renewed up to four years.

Key Job Responsibilities:
  • Assists with preparing food and formulas and feeds animals according to established schedules and specifications
  • Observes animal behavior, performs basic animal care, and reports concerns to the appropriate entities to contribute to the health and well-being of animals to support research and teaching
  • Inventories, cleans, and maintains organization of animal holding spaces and supplies
  • Maintains organization of and updates records related to research procedures
  • Inspects and reports equipment problems to ensure optimal and safe operation

Required Qualifications:
  • Experience following written protocols, standard operating procedures, or federal regulatory guidelines in laboratory, clinical, animal care, facility, or safety-sensitive environments

  • Experience handling vertebrate animals in a professional, academic, research, veterinary, or agricultural setting, including situations requiring calm and controlled handling of animals that may resist or attempt to bite

  • Experience performing vertebrate animal husbandry tasks (feeding, observation, cage or enclosure cleaning, or related care)

  • Prior use of digital communication tools or mobile applications in a workplace setting

  • Documented experience completing accurate written or digital logs, checklists, inventories, or observation records as part of daily work duties

  • Previous use of tablets or computers to create or edit documents, spreadsheets, or data entries (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Workspace, or similar)

  • Experience performing sanitation, custodial, or facility-support tasks in an institutional or commercial environment, including safe handling of cleaning chemicals and adherence to established procedures

  • Able to walk most of the work day, lift 50 lb, reach, bend, kneel with or without reasonable accommodation

  • Minimum education requirement: High School Diploma or equivalent

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Biology or closely related field

  • Familiarity with the UW-Oshkosh campus and procedures

  • Experience assisting with stockroom and/or teaching/research laboratory management, e.g. inventory, disposal, inspection

  • Experience with institutional documentation responsibilities

  • Interest in biomedical research and/or science education
