Title: Training Lead & Analyst - Genomic Epidemiology

$60,000 - $90,000 / Posted Thru: 12/26/2025



Location: Hybrid, Lansing MI - Must work and Live in the state of Michigan



Purpose: The purpose of this position is to lead genomic epidemiology training and workforce development efforts based out of the Genomics Section at the MDHHS Bureau of Laboratories. Primary responsibilities include identifying and addressing genomic epidemiology training needs and, in collaboration with other subject matter experts within the Genomics Section, assembling and developing training materials and events for various stakeholders within Michigan and the Midwest region. The individual in this position will also work closely with state and federal partners to shape national genomic epidemiology workforce development activities and strategy. In addition to these training lead responsibilities, this individual will support other genomic epidemiology activities within the section as needed, including compiling and analyzing data outputs from whole genome sequencing (WGS) to support genomic surveillance and outbreak/cluster identification for pathogens of public health importance.



Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Administer and summarize genomic epidemiology training needs assessments to inform training priorities and development for the Midwest region.
  • Plan, and in collaboration with other subject matter experts within the Genomics Section, develop genomic epidemiology trainings. Throughout this process, identify the scope, audiences, and timelines for completion.
  • Coordinate or co-coordinate all aspects of hosting genomic epidemiology training sessions or workshops, including site selection, approvals, budgeting, program development and evaluation, speaker agreements, registration, on-site logistics, and travel and housing arrangements.
  • Evaluate the impact of training offerings and summarize findings to share with management and external partners.
  • Host or co-host calls and listservs pertaining to genomic epidemiology training development.
  • Maintain relationships with state, federal, and academic partners involved in public health workforce development for genomic epidemiology.
  • Share summaries of projects and assessments via scientific publications and/or presentations.
  • Gather, clean, and compile genomic and epidemiological data outputs to support outbreak investigations and surveillance as needed.
  • Provide assistance and insight for investigative work to develop improved analyses methodologies or services, as well as provide data for Department approved public health surveillance and research activities as needed.
  • Perform other work-related duties as required by management.
  • Always represent the best interests of MPHI and MDHHS.



Qualifications/Requirements:

Education: MS or MPH or PhD in Epidemiology, Public Health, Microbiology, Biostatistics, or a field related to the requirements of the position.

Experience: 12 months of experience within the field of infectious disease or public health. Experience with developing science/health communication materials for different technical backgrounds preferred.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements: This position is a hybrid position, with the in-person portion being located in an office cubicle within a laboratory setting. Must have ability to work at a computer and operate normal office equipment.
