We are seeking a highly qualified, sworn Campus Police Officer who also holds an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification to join our dedicated team. This unique role integrates the responsibilities of a law enforcement officer with the specialized capabilities of an EMT, supporting a comprehensive approach to campus safety and well-being. Applicants who do not currently possess an EMT certification may still be considered; paid training is available, and the EMT credential must be obtained within nine months of employment. We are looking for a skilled and service- oriented individual to join us in a multifaced position that encompasses law enforcement, emergency medical response, and exceptional guest service. This position will work rotating 10-12 hour shifts. Salary is dependent upon experience. Compensation and benefits are as follows: Police Officer III: Positions at this level require a High School Diploma or GED and 4 years of experience as a sworn local, state or federal law enforcement officer. Current certification from NC CJETSC as commissioned police. Must have the NC Intermediate Law Enforcement Certificate or obtain it within 6 months. The hiring salary for this level is $50,626. Master Police Officer I: Positions at this level require a minimum of a High School Diploma or GED and 6 years' experience as a sworn local, state or federal law enforcement officer. An advanced degree (JD, Masters, Doctorate) reduces the minimum experience requirement by 1 year. Current certification from NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer is required. Must have the NC Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate or obtain it within 6 months. The hiring salary for this level is $53,300. Educational Bonus: $1,500 for bachelor's degree and $3,000 for Advanced Degree from an Accredited University. Benefits through the State of North Carolina and University of North Carolina System will be offered. Career progression increases and educational benefits such as tuition waivers at UNC institutions may be available to eligible officers. The primary purpose of this position is to provide assistance to visitors, volunteers, and employees of The North Carolina Arboretum, protecting State property, enforcing all applicable laws and ordinances, and encouraging compliance with institutional policies. This position reports to the Chief of Police. Additionally, Campus Police manage parking, shuttles, and gatehouse services. Primary duties and responsibilities include: Law Enforcement Duties:
- Provide a safe and orderly environment and render assistance in times of need.
- Enforce local, state, and federal laws to maintain public order and safety.
- Investigate and respond to incidents, accidents, and crimes.
- Conduct community outreach and engagement to build positive relationships.
- Opening, closing and securing gates and buildings.
- Patrolling the buildings and grounds on foot and by vehicle.
- Fire prevention, security and safety inspections.
- Training and assistance for other Arboretum staff and volunteers on emergency and safety procedures and other best practices.
- Deterring criminal activity.
- Responding to and investigating complaints and violations of N.C. Criminal, Motor Vehicle, and Wildlife Laws, including determining the cause, gathering information, and preserving evidence.
- Regulating traffic and parking and issuing verbal and written warnings, citations, and effecting arrests for violations of applicable N.C. Criminal Law.
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Duties:
- Provide emergency medical care.
- Administer basic life support interventions as required.
- Collaborate with medical professionals and agencies to ensure seamless patient care.
Guest Service Duties:
- Serve as a point of contact for community members, visitors, and stakeholders.
- Assist with the management of parking and shuttle services.
- Provide information, assistance, and support in a friendly and professional manner.
- Collaborate with community organizations and businesses to enhance guest experiences.
Community Engagement:
- Participate in community events, programs, and initiatives.
- Act as a liaison between law enforcement, emergency services, and community.
- Proactively address community concerns and foster a positive relationship.
Special Physical/ Mental Requirements Candidates must meet the physical and psychological requirements of the North Carolina Criminal Education and Standards Commission, which includes a physical exam, psychological exam, and drug test.

About the Team Campus Police is the primary provider of law enforcement services for The North Carolina Arboretum. The fundamental responsibilities of this sworn officer position involve providing assistance to visitors, volunteers and employees of The North Carolina Arboretum, protecting State property, enforcing all applicable laws and ordinances and encouraging compliance with institutional policies. Minimum Education, Experience, and Skills High school diploma or equivalency. Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer by the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission. Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET). EMT-B certified Care or the willingness/ability to become EMT-B certified. Ability to qualify on the Standard Law Enforcement Firearm Qualification Course. Because of the unique nature of this assignment, a minimum of 4 years experience is necessary. Valid driver's license and a clean driving record. Successful completion of background checks. Required Competencies Technical Knowledge Communication Skills Organizational Awareness and Commitment Problem Solving Analytical and Conceptual Thinking Preferred Education, Experience, and Skills Previous experience in law enforcement and emergency medical services is preferred. Experience or training in incident command, search and rescue, firefighting, and/or with hazardous materials management requirements.
