Part of The Johns Hopkins University and a national leader in scientific research and development, the Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) is located midway between Baltimore and Washington, D.C. We are seeking a Trades Trainee Plumber to assist in facilities and infrastructure construction supporting APL's central initiatives. APL is preparing for a new era of growth, with more than $2 billion in capital investments planned in new construction and facility modernization projects. Reporting to the Section Supervisor for Construction, the Trades Trainee Plumber will assist in renovation construction projects.

As a Plumber -Trades Trainee in Design and Construction, you will...
  • Work under the direction of a Maryland State licensed individual to assemble, install, troubleshoot, and repair plumbing hardware, fixtures, and piping in general facilities per the plumbing code with supervision.
  • Independently use hand/power tools and test equipment such as pipe threaders, drills, pipe cleaning devices, see snakes, etc.
  • Apply information gained from testers to solve and correct problems
  • Coordinate work with customers for minimal disruptions and quick responses
  • Plan and layout required materials and test for proper performance after completing the work steps
  • Make necessary adjustments to system and equipment to ensure compliant operation
  • Routinely operate APL vehicles and industrial equipment, use personal protective equipment, outside work during inclement weather conditions, and overtime may be required

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...
  • Have earned a high school diploma or have comparable experience that reflects math and language skills at the level of a high school graduate
  • Desire to learn rules, regulations, and guidelines of applicable codes in the trades
  • Effective communication skills
  • Have a valid driver's license and can pass a Motor Vehicle Record check
You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...
  • One-year of formal experience in a trade
  • Experience in the use of common hand tools, simple power equipment, and measuring devices
  • Informal, hands-on experience and/or a demonstrated aptitude for skilled trades work
Working Conditions
  • Standard schedule: 6:00 a.m.-2:30 p.m., with flexibility for extended hours or weekend work during peak periods or outages
  • Will involve operating APL vehicles and industrial equipment (subject to motor vehicle record review)
  • Work may occur outdoors or in confined spaces and may require climbing ladders, scaffolds, or working at heights
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and assist other trades as needed
  • Regular participation in required EPA and OSHA/MOSH safety certifications, including PPE, confined space entry, fall protection, lockout/tagout, forklifts, and related training

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL's good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance.
