About the MFA Program

The Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Creative Writing provides writers with the tools and skills to forge professional ties and succeed after graduation. This two-year program leverages Drexel's historical approach to education with an emphasis on experiential and career-focused opportunities. With a mix of online and in-person opportunities, the MFA in Creative Writing's low-residency format accommodates the schedules of aspiring writers. The MFA program is housed in the Department of English and Philosophy.

Job Summary

The Drexel MFA program is looking for writers who work in different styles and genres, such as literary fiction, fantasy, humor, historical fiction, sci fi, suspense, young adult, etc. to be hired as adjunct faculty. The adjunct faculty member will teach one student in a structured packet exchange, offered fully online. The student will hand in three packets over the course of ten weeks, and each packet will consist of approximately 15-20 pages of fiction. The Adjunct will meet with the student at the beginning of the quarter to establish expectations and discuss student goals. The faculty member will read each packet closely and give student line edits and a detailed editorial letter. The student can expect to meet with the faculty member to discuss each editorial letter. Faculty member feedback can refer to matters of style, structure, tone, character development and overall narrative structure and story architecture. There is also a professional development aspect to the packet exchanges and instructors will be expected to offer guidance on query letters and lists of possible submission venues.

Essential Functions



  • Teach required number of credit hours per quarter based on contract.
  • Read and critique student fiction and give detailed feedback in a constructive manner.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills related to sophisticated teaching of creative writing techniques.
  • Evaluate student achievement of curricular objectives/outcomes.
  • Meet with student approximately four times over the course of quarter.
  • Maintain communication with the program director regarding any course or student issues.


Required Qualifications



  • Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree
  • At least one published novel or collection of short stories with a literary press, small press, or major publisher.
