University Police

Job Description

The Police Department Trainee will undergo comprehensive training to prepare for a role within the campus law enforcement team. This position offers a unique opportunity to learn and contribute to the safety and security of our campus community.

Police Department Trainee Position will include the cost of tuition to the Regional Academy, contingent upon the completion of the program, the completion of the FTO program with S&T Police, and 3 years of service with the S&T Police.

Key Responsibilities

  • Study and become familiar with the geography of the campus, identifying key locations, buildings, and landmarks
  • Gain proficiency in the technological tools utilized for campus safety and security, including surveillance systems, access control systems, alarms, and emergency communication devices
  • Shadow experienced police officers to observe daily duties and responsibilities
  • Report weekly to a designated training officer
  • Maintain a level of physical fitness consistent with the requirements of the Regional Academy
  • Learn firsthand about law enforcement practices and community engagement strategies
  • Commit to full-time attendance at the Regional Academy
  • Review campus security reports to stay informed about incidents and trends affecting campus safety
  • Serve as a representative of our campus/division, upholding our values and standards throughout the training period
  • Engage with students, faculty, staff, and visitors while learning the roles and responsibilities of the campus police department
  • Training for POST certification
  • Understands how tasks/activities relate to others on the team and how the team integrates with other related, similar teams and completes all assigned tasks
  • Organizes and completes assignments according to priorities
  • Gathers and relays information according to standard processes and procedures
  • Evaluates and selects solutions from established options/procedures
  • Analyzes various situations and problems and takes appropriate action
  • Impacts own team through the quality of the services or information provided
  • Communicates through the regular exchange of information, ranging from routine to complex; ensures objectivity and sensitivity in communications are applied
Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • A valid Missouri operator's license
Preferred Qualifications

30 college credit hours from accredited college or university OR 2 years federal active duty military service with an honorable discharge

Anticipated Hiring Range

The anticipated hiring range for this position has been established as $16.82 hourly.

Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the individual's particular combination of education, skills, and experience, as well as organizational requirements.
