Job Description

UM System is committed to fostering an inclusive and accessible digital environment for all visitors, alumni, students, faculty, and staff. We are seeking a Digital Accessibility Specialist to support system-wide compliance with WCAG 2.1/2.2 and ensure that all digital tools, platforms, and IT procurement processes align with accessibility best practices. This position will play a critical role in reviewing VPATs, evaluating HECVATs, and integrating accessibility into the IT procurement process to meet both institutional policy and regulatory obligations.

Evaluate third-party software, platforms, and services for accessibility conformance based on WCAG 2.1/2.2 AA and Section 508 standards. Review and interpret VPATs (Voluntary Product Accessibility Templates) and HECVATs to assess vendor accessibility claims and documentation.

Collaborate with UM and IT procurement, legal, and IT teams to ensure accessibility requirements are embedded in RFPs, contracts, and purchasing decisions.

Partner and Collaborate with academic and administrative departments to support accessible digital environments in learning, research, business and operations.

Maintain and document evaluations, accessibility risk ratings, and remediation work with vendors for follow-up to support institutional compliance and reporting.

Stay up to date on accessibility legislation and standards (e.g., ADA, Section 504/508), higher ed accessibility trends, and evolving WCAG standards to apply to operational daily work.

Contribute to UM system wide initiatives by providing accessibility expertise, education and assistance to meet the regulatory requirements while building a sustainable program.

Shift

Monday - Friday, 8am - 5pm

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and 3+ years of experience in digital accessibility compliance, preferably in a higher education or public sector environment.

Preferred Qualifications

Digital accessibility certificates preferred (WAS, CPACC,CPWA, etc) Preferred advanced skills in: Web development coding, ARIA, graphic design (UX), visual design or multimedia (CSS, Video, Adobe, html, CSS) and PDF Accessibility.

Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary Range: $39,500 - $67,000 Commensurate with experience
