Overview

Selective Insurance is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Software Engineer - Database to join our IT Application Development team. This role will focus on designing, developing, and optimizing database solutions that power our enterprise applications. You'll play a key role in enhancing data operations, building robust SQL Server stored procedures, and supporting scalable, high-performance systems.


Responsibilities

  • Design and implement efficient database schemas and stored procedures in SQL Server.
  • Collaborate with application developers to integrate database logic into enterprise systems.
  • Develop and maintain ETL processes and data pipelines to support business operations.
  • Monitor and optimize database performance, ensuring high availability and reliability.
  • Participate in code reviews, peer mentoring, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Support data governance and compliance efforts across the organization.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve database-related issues in production and development environments.
  • Develop, optimize and implement database deployment strategies.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in database engineering or software development with a strong focus on SQL Server.
  • Proficiency in writing complex stored procedures, functions, triggers, and performance tuning.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in data modeling, and schema evolution.
  • Experience with data ops practices, including CI/CD for database deployments.
  • Familiarity with SSIS, SSRS, and other Microsoft data tools is a plus.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently or in a team.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience in insurance or financial services industry.
  • Exposure to cloud-based database platforms (e.g., Azure SQL, AWS RDS).
  • Knowledge of data modeling and normalization techniques.
  • Familiarity with Agile development methodologies.

The actual base salary is based on geographic location, and the range is representative of salaries for this role throughout Selective's footprint. Additional considerations include relevant education, qualifications, experience, skills, performance, and business needs.
