Job Summary

The Senior Polysomnographic Technologist conducts both routine and complex diagnostic and therapeutic sleep studies for patients of all ages, including in-lab and portable home sleep testing. This role is responsible for accurately scoring polysomnographic and home sleep apnea test data and ensuring the highest technical quality of studies performed.

Under the direction of the Neurodiagnostic Supervisor and Sleep Lab Medical Director, and overall supervision of the Neurodiagnostic Services Director, the Senior Polysomnographic Technologist supports the daily operations of the Sleep Lab. The position also contributes to a positive patient experience by fostering an environment of goodwill and may assist with front office duties as needed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and advanced diagnostic and therapeutic polysomnographic procedures
  • Conduct and score portable and in-lab sleep studies, including home sleep apnea testing
  • Monitor and analyze patients' physiological data during sleep studies to ensure accuracy and quality
  • Calibrate, operate, and maintain sleep lab equipment, troubleshooting as needed
  • Ensure adherence to all safety, infection control, and regulatory standards
  • Document, interpret, and report findings according to established protocols
  • Educate and prepare patients for sleep studies, explaining procedures and addressing questions
  • Collaborate with physicians, supervisors, and interdisciplinary team members to ensure coordinated patient care
  • Participate in quality assurance, continuing education, and process improvement activities
  • Support administrative and front office tasks assigned to ensure efficient department operations

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload a license and/or certification if required for the position

  • Registered Polysomnograph Tech (R.PSG.T.)
  • Must be CA State licensed as a Polysomnography Technologist or must be in progress and current by time of hire (documentation will be requested)
  • American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS), or UC Davis Health CPR
  • 2 years of experience as a Registered Polysom Tech (R.PSG.T.)
  • Interpersonal communication skills to interact with tact and diplomacy with hospital and clinic patients, physicians, and staff at all levels
  • Ability to engage in collaborative problem-solving with coworkers and staff
  • Must have the ability to function as a "team player," being considerate and flexible, considering the needs of your peers
  • Ability to exercise discretion to ensure that patient confidentiality is maintained, and a professional, respectful hospital, clinic, or laboratory environment exists at all times
  • Ability to maintain composure, efficiency, and a positive, customer-service oriented manner during periods of peak workload, with frequent interruptions, under tight deadlines, and when interacting with patients who are ill, angry, or emotionally distressed
  • Accomplish a variety of concurrent assignments effectively and efficiently
  • Organizes and prioritizes assignments to complete work in a timely and efficient manner, particularly when there are changes in workload or assignments
  • Remains flexible and adaptable to changes in policies and procedures
  • Written and oral communication skills to clearly provide information, explanations, and instructions to, and to elicit information from others with varying levels of ability to understand, including individuals who are ill or distressed, or for whom English may be a second language
  • Filing skills to maintain physical and digital logs and files of information in alphabetical, chronological, and/ or numerical order, such that it is current and easily retrievable

The Sleep Laboratory, part of the UC Davis Neurodiagnostic Labs, is an American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM)-accredited facility dedicated to diagnosing and treating sleep disorders across all age groups. The lab is managed by the Neurodiagnostic Services Director in collaboration with the Medical Director, ensuring the highest standards of clinical care, patient safety, and diagnostic accuracy through advanced technology and evidence-based practices.

Work Environment

  • UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco-free campus effective January 1, 2014.   • Must be able to work in the outpatient lab at Midtown and the acute care hospital settings.
