Section II Summary of Job Function

The nurse practitioner functions as an independent care provider in collaboration with the medical/surgical staff

Their advance practice is characterized by comprehensive health assessments and management of patients with acute and/or chronic health problems

Obtain patient histories and perform physical examination

Write admitting orders, routine orders and daily progress notes as indicated

Assess and manage common health problems

Order and evaluate pertinent diagnostic tests including but not limited to: Radiology, laboratories and ECGs

Prescribe pharmacological agents and non pharmacological treatments for appropriate medical conditions

Educate patients and/or families regarding disease process, medical intervention and health promotion

Document patient teaching

Refers and communicates pertinent abnormalities to medical director/medical specialist,

Performs clinical procedures

Removal of invasive drains, lines and catheters, debridement of superficial wound, and perform arterial blood gases

Serves as a resource for nursing and ancillary staff in regard to patient and disease management

Facilitate practices that are in compliance with PRO-NJ and JCAHO requirements,

Licensed Registered Nurse in the state or New Jersey,

Certified Nurse Practitioner in the state of New Jersey,

Masters prepared in Nursing from an accredited program, ACLS certified,

Work Environment and Hazards

Hazards include risk of exposure to communicable diseases and risk of physical injury from lifting patients and operation of equipment

Must meet requirements of the ADA,

All patient related hospital departments, patients, families, visitors, nursing personnel and medical staff

Job Specific Requirements

Identifies appropriate patient for NP coverage,

Performs daily rounds

Discusses plan of care with MD s and multidisciplinary team

Evaluates pertinent diagnostic tests in accordance with NP protocol

Communicates with MD regarding pertinent abnormalities

Facilitates compliance of PRO-NJ requirements

Writes orders for pharmacologic agents/non-pharmacologic treatments

Writes orders for pharmacologic agents/non-pharmacologic treatments for appropriate medical conditions

according to NP protocol

Completes daily progress notes/discharge sheet in accordance with PRO-NJ requirements

Communicates with collaborating MD in a timely manner regarding pertinent patient issues

Assesses and manages health problems occurring during hospitalization per NP protocol

Educates patients and families regarding disease process, medical interventions and health promotion

Serves as a resource for nursing and ancillary staff with regards to patient disease management

Safely performs clinical procedures in addition to basic RN functions - removal of invasive drains, catheters, monitoring devices, pacing wires, PA catheters, chest tubes, etc

Facilitates scheduling procedures and arranging ancillary studies

Monitors patients during CTA testing

Daily triage rounds on unit and in Emergency Department

Handles medical problems and emergencies under supervision of attendings

Documents in progress notes, writes orders and performs H&P if requested

Collects and analyzes Heart Failure readmission data

Coordinates and supervises the Heart Failure

Coordinates schedules for Cardiology Nurse,

Precepts Nurse Practitioners

Prepares presentations, participates in system meetings / external programs,

Completes special projects as assigned
