NICU APP-PNP Position

Provides care to the late preterm (34 weeks' GA or greater) through term newborns admitted to the NICU under the supervision of Attending Neonatologist.

Responsibilities:

1. Participate in the clinical care and monitoring of newborns admitted to the NICU under the supervision and in consultation with the neonatologists and neonatal nurse practitioners.

2. Attend high risk deliveries with the NICU team, providing management and resuscitation of the newborn.

3. Gather data from available primary sources, perform history, interim history and physical examinations.
4. Order diagnostic tests/imaging and follow-up results.
5. Recognize deviations from normal, and in conjunction with the neonatologist, determine diagnoses, treatment and follow up plan.
6. Communicate with nursing staff, ancillary services, subspecialists and neonatology staff in a timely and professional manner.

7. Update, counsel and educate families/caregivers on patient status and plan.

9. Provide discharge teaching related to infant plan, preventative health and community resources.
10. Document delivery of health care in accordance with specific specialty area standards of Division of Neonatology: Including delivery consultation, procedure notes, admission notes, interim summaries and discharge summaries.
11. Management of patients requiring nasal cannula, high flow nasal cannula and continuous positive pressure (CPAP).
12. Order pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic interventions.

13. Performs procedures (within scope of practice)

Sample Procedures:

1. Neonatal Resuscitation as per NRP certification

2. Insertion of laryngeal mask airway

3. Umbilical arterial and venous catheter removal

3. Peripheral blood draws

4. Insertion and removal of PICC lines

5. PICC line dressing changes.

6. Ventricular Access device taps

GENERAL SUMMARY: Provides inpatient and/or outpatient medical care. Takes patient history, performs physical examination, orders, and interprets tests, makes diagnoses, and institutes appropriate treatment programs. Works in collaboration with staff physicians, house officers, nurses, and other medical care team members to ensure that patient outcomes are achieved safely and efficiently. Specific procedures are individually credentialed as indicated by training and experience. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Master's degree in nursing OR Bachelor's Degree or Completion of an AMA-approved Physician Assistant program. CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED: Certified Nurse Practitioner. Licensed as a Registered Nurse. Current BLS or ACLS as required. Current ATLS/PALS provider status as required by department. OR Requires Michigan state licensure and continued certification by the National. Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). Current ACLS or BLS as required. Current ATLS/PALS provider status as required.

Qualifications:

Licensure / Certification / Registration:

BLS Provider credentialed from the American Heart Association (AHA) obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date required. American Red Cross (ARC) CPR for Professional Rescuers card will be accepted upon hire but renewal must be a BLS Provider card from AHA.

Neonatal Resuscitation Certification

Registered Nurse credentialed from the Michigan Board of Nursing obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date required Nurse Practitioner with Prescriptive Authority credentialed from the Michigan Board of Nursing obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date required Federal DEA license

National Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Certification

Education:
