The TV News Producer & Writer is a broadcast professional who assists with the oversight of content and production elements during WGCU broadcast programming. Works with broadcast team to write, produce and edit content for nightly news program.
Job Description Typical duties may include but are not limited to:
- Assists with the production, direction, and oversight of video production for broadcast.
- Assists Senior Producer in organizing the newscast, including scripts and broadcast outlines.
- Plans program topics in conjunction with the host, editors, and other newsroom staff. Coordinates with internal and external sources to produce newscasts and to plans and create new broadcast content.
- Researches, writes, and edits or works with an editor to create video packages. Assists with the editing and production of final programs for air and on-line.
- Serves as line producer during show production and collaborates with show TV director.
- Assists with studio set-ups, including sets, lighting, sound, and recording.
- Works with broadcast team to select program content, prepare for interviews, and research new topics.
- Identifies content for distribution to other internal media platforms and creates multi-platform treatments of stories whenever appropriate.
Other Duties:
- Participates in on-air fundraising campaigns.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Additional Job Description Required Qualifications:
- This position requires either six years of directly related full-time experience or, as an alternative, a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization and two years of full-time experience directly related to the job functions.
- Professional full time experience in television broadcasting.
- Experience with producing, scripting, and editing video news packages.
- Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's Degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization.
- Two years professional, full time experience in television broadcasting.
- Professional, full-time experience in public broadcasting.
- Experience using After Effects, Live Type, Motion, and Photoshop.
- Experience using studio and/or field cameras.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of public broadcasting industry; awareness of news techniques and practices.
- Knowledge of media production, communication, and dissemination techniques and methods, including alternative ways to inform and entertain via written, verbal, and visual media.
- Knowledge of policies, procedures, and guidelines established by professional organizations and/or governing agencies.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Skilled in the use of journalism principles and techniques.
- Network quality news writing, reporting, digital recording, and production skills.
- Skilled in researching topics for news and interview broadcasts utilizing various resources.
- Strong organizational skills and an ability to prioritize and complete simultaneous projects within deadlines.
- Skill in current digital audio editing, video desktop editing, and general desktop software applications including those that create original data journalism stories.
- Ability to establish and maintain a good rapport with university faculty, staff, students, and the general public.
- Ability to adapt quickly to changing situations and environments.
- Ability to produce live, multi-camera studio productions.
- Ability to comfortably use microphones, portable recording devices for audio, video, and studio production equipment.
- Ability to collaborate and work effectively within the community and willing to contribute to a team effort.
- Ability to diffuse and respond professionally to stressful situations and difficult people.
