Department Summary

The Department of Art Education offers B.F.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees in Art Education, a Graduate Certificate in Museum Education, and the IADS program offers B.A. degrees with concentrations in three pathways: Arts Management, Design Management, and Open Track. Both of these programs, which are merging, enable students to prepare to begin a career in arts and design professions, continue their studies in graduate school, or to become leaders and educators in a variety of educational settings.

Our faculty are engaged artists, scholars, designers, and educators recognized nationally and internationally for their intellectual and creative research. Our programs prepare students to begin careers in arts and design professions, continue graduate studies, or become leaders and educators in diverse educational settings.

UNT has a highly diverse campus with a wide range of languages spoken in addition to English. We welcome candidates who have experience with HSI/MSIs and/or who speak Spanish, Vietnamese, American Sign Language, Chinese (Cantonese, Mandarin and other variations), Arabic, Tagalog, Farsi, French, or/and Yoruba.

Position Overview

The College of Visual Arts and Design (CVAD) at the University of North Texas (UNT) invites applications for Chair of the Department of Art Education and Interdisciplinary Arts and Design Studies Program. This pivotal leadership role at a Carnegie Tier 1 research university oversees the merger of these two dynamic academic units: Art Education and Interdisciplinary Art and Design Studies (IADS).

The Department of Art Education has a long-standing reputation for excellence and innovation. This appointment marks an exciting moment as it combines with IADS, the fastest-growing undergraduate program in the college. IADS plays a central role in advancing interdisciplinary approaches to art, design, and culture.

The Chair provides leadership for the Department of Art Education and the Interdisciplinary Arts and Design Studies Program and is responsible for the vision of its academic endeavors and the advancement of excellence in research and creative activity, teaching, and service across the Art Education Department and Interdisciplinary Arts and Design Studies (IADS) program. The Chair will support the merged program's continued growth and facilitate curricular innovations that develop its interdisciplinary potential. Key responsibilities include collaborating on the redesign of the Ph.D. program to expand its scope beyond the current art education focus.

The ideal candidate will bring a consultative and collaborative leadership style, strong interpersonal and communication skills, and demonstrated ability to build consensus across diverse faculty and disciplines. The Chair will complement existing research strengths while positioning both Art Education and IADS as integral contributors to CVAD's success.

The Chair manages fiscal and personnel issues, represents the department to internal and external constituencies, and actively participates in fundraising initiatives.
The Chair will teach one class each semester.
The Chair reports to the Dean and works closely with CVAD's Associate Deans, the other CVAD Department Chairs, the Foundations Director, and Art Education and IADS faculty.
The ideal candidate will bring visionary thinking, a passion for art and design, entrepreneurship, administration, and the highest standards of creative and scholarly excellence to the position.
Evidence of professional and progressive leadership within an institution or organization, excellent management and mentoring skills, and the proven ability to manage a large and varied department is essential. These attributes may be demonstrated through a track record as an artist, designer, practitioner, teacher, researcher, and/or administrator.
The Chair will adhere to and foster the highest standards of ethical conduct, compliance with applicable laws and regulations, appropriate financial oversights and controls, as well as safety, security, and confidentiality precautions related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications

For this 12-month faculty administrator appointment, we seek a candidate who has a terminal degree in Art Education, Arts and Design Administration, Interdisciplinary Arts and Design, or a related field and has professional experience sufficient to qualify for appointment at the rank of Professor with tenure.

Preferred Qualifications

Evidence of collaborative administrative leadership and program development and implementation within a university, effective communication skills, and the proven ability to successfully partner in curriculum building and arts advocacy.
